Tyson Gay: Ready to take on Bolt, Blake in fastest 100 meters yet http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/2012/08/01/tyson-gay-ready-to-take-on-bolt-blake-in-fastest-100-meters-yet/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/2012/08/01/tyson-gay-ready-to-take-on-bolt-blake-in-fastest-100-meters-yet/#comments Wed, 01 Aug 2012 16:35:51 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2012/08/01/tyson-gay-ready-to-take-on-bolt-blake-in-fastest-100-meters-yet/ U.S. track & field athlete Tyson Gay is entering the 2012 Olympics during an era of the fastest sprinters we’ve ever seen.

If Gay makes it to the final of the 100-meter on August 5, he will likely be facing Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake, either of whom can lay claim to the title of fastest man in the world. In London, Gay will also be up against his own teammate, Justin Gatlin.

Gay, who has run the 100-meter faster than any American, has a personal best time in the event of 9.69, but that was before his career was riddled with injury — he hurt his hamstring in the trials before the Beijing games and was eliminated in the semifinals. A year ago, he had surgery on his hip. He has yet to win an Olympic medal.

“I came up short in 2008…. so I really wanted to redeem myself for my family and my country,” Gay told reporters at the Adidas media lounge today. “I think last year was my toughest time, not able to run or even compete. I remember one of my friends said he knew I was in pain because he had never seen my quit before.”

“It’s tough, but on this day, it’s about going home with a medal,” he said about facing sprinters, like Bolt and Blake, who may be faster than him. “If they run those times I’ve never done before, I can only hope my body is able to go there as well.”

The 100-meter with the three athletes could be the fastest race of its kind. It could be the last change at an Olympic medal for Gay, 29, and one of the few chances to regain U.S. dominance in the event.

“I think it’s very important for the U.S. to get back on top in the sprints,” Gay said. “I think it’s very important for us to win the relay. And it’s very important for me to try to take some leadership and try to be a part of history for the united states, as well.”

Tony Parker files $20 million lawsuit over injuries from Chris Brown, Drake fight http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2012/06/22/tony-parker-files-20-million-lawsuit-over-injuries-from-chris-brown-drake-fight/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2012/06/22/tony-parker-files-20-million-lawsuit-over-injuries-from-chris-brown-drake-fight/#comments Fri, 22 Jun 2012 16:49:06 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2012/06/22/tony-parker-files-20-million-lawsuit-over-injuries-from-chris-brown-drake-fight/ open letter posted on Vibe. (via TMZ) ZZZ0622 Tony Parker Complaint]]> The fallout continues as another big name celebrity ends up in the headlines over the hip-hop brawl heard round the world between Chris Brown and Drake.

Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs player (and former husband of actress Eva Longoria) has filed a $20 million lawsuit against the nightclub that was the scene of the rumble.

Parker alleges he was at the scene of the crime that night — and was injured during the altercation when shards of glass from broken bottles lacerated his cornea.

His suit claims negligence on the club’s part for letting the fight, rumored to have sparked over singer Rihanna, take place. Parker alleges the club’s management let the rival hip hop stars in, knowing full well that there was “bad blood between Drake and Brown.”

The hefty payout Parker is seeking doesn’t seem so hefty when you factor in his current $50 million contract with the Spurs — if his allegations about the injury are true, it could affect his NBA career, not to mention his planned participation on the French national basketball team for the Olympics.

The media frenzy surrounding the fight has painted a picture of a violent rumble involving two warring entourages, with bottles flying and bloody injuries. Industry insiders, though, insist this brawl was an isolated incident in the city’s nightlife scene.

“While an incident like this is extremely rare and unfortunate, the heightened attention to this specific altercation is shedding an out-of-context light on nightlife and the nightlife industry as a whole,” Anessa DeSarno, a former nightlife professional, said in an open letter posted on Vibe.

Justin Bieber suffers concussion in Paris after smashing into glass wall http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2012/06/01/justin-bieber-suffers-concussion-in-paris-after-smashing-into-glass-wall/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2012/06/01/justin-bieber-suffers-concussion-in-paris-after-smashing-into-glass-wall/#comments Fri, 01 Jun 2012 14:09:04 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2012/06/01/justin-bieber-suffers-concussion-in-paris-after-smashing-into-glass-wall/ ]]> “Baby, baby, baby, OWWWWW!”

Canadian pop star Justin Bieber ran headlong into trouble on a European promotional tour on Thursday, knocking himself out backstage in Paris and dealing with a crushing crowd in Norway that left some fans injured one day earlier.

Thursday’s incident occurred after the singer fell into a glass wall during an intimate concert in Paris. Bieber told celebrity news website TMZ.com he felt lightheaded but was able to perform his last song before going backstage and passing out for 15 seconds.

TMZ posted an audio clip of its conversation with the pop sensation in which he said doctors told him he suffered a concussion and ordered him to relax. The singer quickly posted on Twitter that he was doing well, joking about the incident and saying “gotta laugh at yourself sometimes.”

The concussion comes one day after Bieber, on a brief tour of major European cities to promote upcoming album “Believe,” was met with a crush of fans before a free concert in Oslo leading to reports of dozens of young girls being injured.

Bieber’s record label, Universal Music, said in a statement to celebrity site E! Online on Thursday that it “regrets strongly that some of those who were Justin concert had a bad experience.”

A label executive said “fortunately no one was seriously injured,” and added that Bieber wanted to return to Norway and perform a future concert there.

Calls and e-mails to Bieber’s representatives were not immediately returned.

Bieber performed a free, six-song concert at the Oslo Opera House on Wednesday that is planned to be featured on his upcoming one-hour NBC television special to be aired next month.

The 18-year-old singer was forced to tweet a safety message ahead of the show after police were unable to control the crowds of fans trying to catch a glimpse of the star.

“for the show to happen u must all listen to the police. we are all concerned for your safety and i want what is best for u. please listen,” Bieber posted to his 22 million Twitter followers on Wednesday.

TMZ said 49 young girls were injured and 14 taken to hospitals, and police came close to declaring a state of emergency in the capital. Those reports could not be immediately confirmed.

This is not the first time Bieber fever has caused crowd control and safety issues. In November 2009, fans stampeded a shopping mall in Long Island, New York ahead of an appearance by the pop star, forcing organizers to cancel the event.

Bieber’s manager was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal nuisance, but the charges were later dropped.

Long road back for Leonhard is finally nearing conclusion http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/2011/08/07/long-road-back-for-leonhard-is-finally-nearing-conclusion/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/sports/2011/08/07/long-road-back-for-leonhard-is-finally-nearing-conclusion/#comments Sun, 07 Aug 2011 21:27:12 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/08/07/long-road-back-for-leonhard-is-finally-nearing-conclusion/ It’s been a long, frustrating recovery for Jets safety Jim Leonhard, who is just now beginning to get a sniff of the field following the season-ending leg injury he suffered last December.

For Leonhard, it was the Grinch who stole his NFL season. The loss of the veteran, called by head coach Rex Ryan “the quarterback of our secondary,” was a big blow to the defense.

Leonhard has gone from struggling to get himself to his seat in front of his locker to now standing on the sidelines and following the defense through the opening days of training camp. The team’s medical staff is still keeping his participation low key.

Leonhard’s rehab was grueling, but the staff was surprised how quickly he recovered.

“I tried to get in there as consistently as possible,” Leonhard said about his rehab. “If I could get in there every day, I got in there every day.”
