UPDATE: Rally planned after Hoboken denied permit for Snooki, JWOWW spin-off http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2012/01/31/update-rally-planned-after-hoboken-denied-permit-for-snooki-jwoww-spin-off/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2012/01/31/update-rally-planned-after-hoboken-denied-permit-for-snooki-jwoww-spin-off/#comments Tue, 31 Jan 2012 16:51:28 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2012/01/31/update-rally-planned-after-hoboken-denied-permit-for-snooki-jwoww-spin-off/ UPDATE: The former publicist of "Jersey Shore" star JWOWW is calling on fans to join him in a rally demanding the City of Hoboken grant a permit allowing MTV to shoot a spin-off reality show there. Todd Shapiro told Metro he expects about 1,000 furious fans to attend the rally Friday outside South Shore Island Tan in Long Island's Franklin Square, JWOWW's hometown. "To not be able to film the number one show on television, that is playing politics with TV," Shapiro said of Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer's decision to deny the permit request. "Who is to say one star or show is better than the other? They wouldn’t be able to say no to George Clooney."
"Jersey Shore" stars Snooki and JWOWW got a reality check after the City of Hoboken denied a request for a permit to shoot their spin-off show in the traditional party town. Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer issued a letter to MTV and 495 Productions citing "public safety and quality of life concerns" as her reason for denying the permit. "We want it to be a dynamic place to have fun, but we don’t want people coming and destroying the city," Zimmer told Metro of the potential crowds that could be attracted to Hoboken while the show filmed. "We are a mile square city with bars and restaurants mixed in with residential areas and you'd have people coming from out of town, creating a lot of noise for residents and other potential public safety issues. I have to look out for quality of life." In the letter to MTV and 459 Productions, Zimmer warned that there will be "zero tolerance" for any filming that is not authorized. "Any attempts to film in a manner that is not permitted without a permit will be dealt with immediately and aggressively by the City of Hoboken," Zimmer wrote. In another letter to 459 Productions from the Hoboken Local Film Commission, members expressed concern over a hoard of onlookers and lingering fans that would follow the crew and cast through the city streets. "The density of our city does not lend itself to 24-hour activity as would be experience by our citizens," the letter said. It's worth noting that "Cake Boss," another popular reality show, films in Hoboken. That show, however, focuses on sugar consumption rather than alcohol consumption. MTV officials had scouted Hoboken and Jersey City as possible sites for the upcoming reality show starring BFF's Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWOWW" Farley, according to The Jersey Journal. The production company can appeal the Hoboken Film Commission's decision, but no word on whether it will. A rep for Snooki could not immediately be reached.  The decision to ban the hard-partying reality stars comes just weeks after Hoboken opted to move its traditionally raucous St. Patrick's Day parade to a weekday, prompting the parade committee to cancel the event entirely. "We want to move away from this unfortunate and, quite frankly, destructive behavior that occurred during St. Patrick's where residents felt like they had to stay in and protect their homes," Zimmer said. "The behavior was unacceptable." According to Cooley, Santucci and Starkman "took another male participant's toothbrush and rubbed the toothbrush around plaintiff's genitals, including rubbing her labia and inserting the toothbrush into plaintiff's vagina." Cooler also says it all happened while cameras were still rolling and producers knew about the rape but never said a word to her about it. She says they did, however, replace the toothbrush. Cooley goes on in the suit to say she reported incidents of sexual abuse, along with other female cast members, but show officials shrugged it off. She also claims male cast members were encouraged to "inappropriately touch female cast members' bodies, including in intimate areas." Gross.

As it turns out, it seems like MTV is trying jump on the Occupy Wall Street bandwagon much faster than that. On November 5, MTV will be airing “True Life: I’m Occupying Wall Street.” The episode will follow 23-year-old Bryan who is “one of the leaders of the sanitation team.” The episode was filmed during the sanitation showdown on Oct. 13 when Zuccotti Park was scheduled to be cleaned. The preview of the episode (which we’ve attached below) is set up as a countdown to the cleaning deadline. As we all know, since this happened several weeks ago, the cleaning was cancelled, though many people were arrested.

The clip MTV released doesn’t provide us with anything that new. We’ve already seen people sleeping in tents and the General Assembly human microphone system they use. We’d be more into having MTV follow the dude who, according to New York Times Magazine, claimed to have lost his virginity at Zuccotti Park. Now that’s an MTV show we’d like to see (but who are we kidding, we’ll probably watch still tune in on Nov. 5). How about you?

On Monday evening an ad was posted on Craiglist with the headline: "Part of Occupy Wall Street? Real World 27 Wants You! (Battery Park) The full ad reads: "MTV's Real World is seeking cast members to tell their unique stories on our show. Please attach 3 RECENT PHOTOS and a brief BIO, including your full NAME, DATE OF BIRTH (for ID purposes only) as well as your CONTACT INFORMATION including PHONE #." A MTV source told Metro that the producers are targeting young, passionate people to be a part of the next cycle but that MTV wouldn't comment further. It's too bad, we really wanted to ask what's up with the random capitalization of certain words in the ad. This comes soon after the LA Times reported that director Christopher Nolan may film parts of 'The Dark Knight Rises' among the protesters. According to a source briefed on the actors' schedules, "case members have been told the shoot could include scenes shot at the Occupy Wall Street protests." Has the movement grown so much it now lost its meaning? With celebrity visits and potential movie and reality show filming, is the protest still representing the 99%? Thoughts?

It seems like everyone’s trying to profit in some way through the Occupy Wall Street movement.

‘Jersey Shore’: The drama’s still there http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/09/13/jersey-shore-the-dramas-still-there/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/09/13/jersey-shore-the-dramas-still-there/#comments Tue, 13 Sep 2011 19:15:19 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/09/13/jersey-shore-the-dramas-still-there/
“It’s been pretty bananas so far [and] it’s gonna continue on like that,” he tells Metro. “We saw the big Mike and Ronnie fight — there are gonna be more of those, more fighting coming up. But at the same time you’re gonna see us connect with Italy more. You’re actually gonna see us like explore a little bit more. It’s gonna be cool.” His fellow castmate Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola, whose love life with bad boy Ronnie Ortiz-Magro has been a focal point of the entire series, is just glad to have less of a hand in this season’s commotion. “All the drama’s gonna be primarily off me and with some other people you wouldn’t really expect to see drama,” she says. “Now everybody can see me in a different way.” When these two aren’t stirring up drama, though, they’re keeping plenty busy on their side projects, and both strive to help their fans stay fresh to death: Vinny is the spokesman for Philips Norelco DIY Hair Clipper Pro, and Sammi has her own perfume, Dangerous, which she describes as “dangerously sweet — just like me.” “I pick my brands like I pick my women: I like quality,” Vinny laughs, adding that he could get behind the clippers because he’s a big proponent of a fresh haircut — he hits the barber every five days! “I have really thick Sicilian hair and if it grows in, it just turns into a big fro. I kinda look like a young Michael Jackson. It’s short so you have to always maintain it. People think if you have long hair you’ve gotta [maintain] it — no, if you have short hair, all you have is the fade, the design in your head, and once that grows in, you need a haircut already.” With all this talk about grooming, we had to know: does Vinny manscape? “You see the scruff on my face? Use your imagination,” he says. Sammi, who says her perfume is “light and airy” and has notes of vanilla and almond, was hands-on with the production of the fragrance, noting that “it was something that I thought represented me and that’s why I put my name on it.” But does her focus on her fragrance mean that things have cooled between she and Ronnie? Not in the least bit. "Me and Ronnie, we’re actually doing great," she says. "We’re still together and everything's going really really well."

Words of wisdom
What was the best piece of travel advice you got before leaving for Italy? Vinny: My Uncle Nino told me if the girls have hair underneath their arms then they’re over 18. I was always giving the armpit check. Sammi: Just make sure you get the right plug to bring with you because in Italy the electricity is different and they don’t have normal plugs. I had an issue with doing my hair so just make sure you know what the outlets and electricity’s gonna be like when you travel. I love my straight hair and I’m obsessed with my hair straightener — without it, it’s like oh my god, a piece of me is missing. Q&A

Who’s the sloppiest roommate?
Vinny: Probably Mike. His sink in Italy looked like a swamp. Sammi: Mike is disgusting. Nicole’s messy with her clothes, but Mike is just legit messy in general. Literally he clogs all the sinks drains because he just had so much face wash and crap everywhere that he just never cleaned up after himself. Who cooks the best? Vinny: You know, I would kind of have to give that to myself. Even though I’m not always the one cooking, when I make steaks and burgers or whatever — I know that’s not hard things — but they all taste good and they’re more quality. Sammi: Vinny just grills food. Mike cooks alright. I think we all can cook in our own way. Who uses the most gel? Vinny: You know the answer to that. Pauly?

Vinny:
Yeah. He uses the most hair gel in America. Who’s the biggest packrat? Vinny: Mike. He had like 20 little bags with him to go to Italy, instead of like three big bags. He’s crazy. Is he a diva? Vinny: (Laughs) Yeah, but I think he’s always been like that. That’s what made him who he is. Sammi: Mike and Nicole had like 20 bags with them in Italy [but] I think Mike takes the cake on that one. Who brings home the most people to smoosh? Vinny: That kinda changes. I’m not gonna lie, Season three me and Pauly were bringing home a lot of people. I kinda took a chill pill with that this season. That’s a hard question because it would probably be between me Mike and Pauly — it kinda changes. Why don’t you just include us as a whole right there: MVP takes home the most girls. Sammi: Pauly and Vinny. Pauly definitely smooshes grenades every day. Follow Meredith Engel on Twitter @MeredithatMetro.

You can take the crew out of Jersey, but you can’t take the Jersey out of the crew. Season 4 of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” is now in full swing, with the cast tearing up the streets of Florence, Italy. As usual, there’s plenty of drama, and castmate Vinny Guadagnino promises that it’s only just begun.

“All the drama’s gonna be primarily off me and with some other people you wouldn’t really expect to see drama,” she says. “Now everybody can see me in a different way.”

When these two aren’t stirring up drama, though, they’re keeping plenty busy on their side projects, and both strive to help their fans stay fresh to death: Vinny is the spokesman for Philips Norelco DIY Hair Clipper Pro, and Sammi has her own perfume, Dangerous, which she describes as “dangerously sweet — just like me.”

“I pick my brands like I pick my women: I like quality,” Vinny laughs, adding that he could get behind the clippers because he’s a big proponent of a fresh haircut — he hits the barber every five days!

“I have really thick Sicilian hair and if it grows in, it just turns into a big fro. I kinda look like a young Michael Jackson. It’s short so you have to always maintain it. People think if you have long hair you’ve gotta [maintain] it — no, if you have short hair, all you have is the fade, the design in your head, and once that grows in, you need a haircut already.”

With all this talk about grooming, we had to know: does Vinny manscape?

“You see the scruff on my face? Use your imagination,” he says.

Sammi, who says her perfume is “light and airy” and has notes of vanilla and almond, was hands-on with the production of the fragrance, noting that “it was something that I thought represented me and that’s why I put my name on it.”

But does her focus on her fragrance mean that things have cooled between she and Ronnie? Not in the least bit.

“Me and Ronnie, we’re actually doing great,” she says. “We’re still together and everything’s going really really well.”

But he was able to measure the success of the performance in another way.

“On Facebook we gained 10,000 new fans in the last 24 hours,” he says. “Every single person that I’ve probably ever met in my whole life has contacted me in the last few days, saying, ‘I saw you on the VMAs and it was so cool!’”

What those new fans and old acquaintances  witnessed was an electrifying four minutes of the only performance close to rock ’n’ roll on the VMAs, made extra special by MTV allowing 300 Young the Giant friends and fans from the band’s hometown of Irvine, Calif., to rock out in the   front section. Gadhia says the fans’ zeal was carefully cultivated.

“It was kind of weird,” he laughs. “They were actually able to see the whole show via dress rehearsal, which was cool. They were like the only people there, so I think they got a kick out of that — but after that, they weren’t allowed to have any electronics on them. I didn’t know they were going to be this strict, but they kept them on lockdown in this nice ballroom. … They kept them kinda stir-crazy for six or seven hours.”

Gadhia says he got to watch the whole show, which boasted a roster only a little more diverse than Young the Giant’s tour-mates. The band has shared bills with jam bands like Dispatch and modern rock acts like Neon Trees. On their current tour, they’re opening for Incubus.

“We don’t like limiting the type of people that should listen to our music,” says Gadhia.

These are the questions that have been burning inside us since MTV started running promos of season four of “The Jersey Shore.” Italy gets smushed and we can’t wait to see it. The cast ventured to Florence for this season, which premiers tonight at 10 pm on MTV.

“I think Thursday night you’re going to see that there are two different story lines that are going to unfold that no one is going to see coming and they are the two story lines that make this season completely crazy,” Jersey Shore producer Sally Salsano told Zap2it earlier this week.

‘120 Minutes’ away from reality http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/07/27/120-minutes-away-from-reality/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/07/27/120-minutes-away-from-reality/#comments Wed, 27 Jul 2011 19:01:58 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/07/27/120-minutes-away-from-reality/
That was more than 15 years ago, and now indie rock is everywhere. But when a revamped “120 Minutes” hits MTV2 this Saturday, it will be an alternative of another sort: Music videos on an MTV network again, as opposed to their usual reality programming.

Pinfield, who has always been known as much for his wealth of information  as he was for being, as he says, “a short, bald guy who doesn’t look like a model,” is quick to point out that the network has been running hip-hop vids on “Sucker Free Sundays.”

“I don’t think anybody over there ever didn’t want to keep playing music,” he says. “It was just the success of all those reality shows ended up taking over. But it is exciting to be in on the rebirth of music here.”

When discussing music, Pinfield speaks like he’s rushing to put his thoughts into words before a new thought occurs.

“I’ve always had ADD, that’s why music was the focus that reeled me in,” he says. “I think the rest of the world has caught up, because the way people digest music and information has changed quite a bit.”

The new show certainly is faster paced. Where the original program had a guest or two, “120” 2.0 is packed with artists big and small, from Kings of Leon and Foo Fighters to smaller acts that Pinfield hopes to introduce to wider audiences.

“It’s a party philosophy,” says Pinfield of his programming. “If you go to somebo-dy’s house for a party and you know one or two people, you’re going to hang out and they might introduce you to one or two others.”

When Matt Pinfield first hosted the weekly alternative music roundup “120 Minutes” on MTV, the videos he played actually were an alternative to the mainstream music that dominated the network. That late-night dose of independent music on Sundays was, for many, the only chance to absorb such glorious weirdness.

Director Ruben Fleischer gets guy-humor, dude http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/05/05/director-ruben-fleischer-gets-guy-humor-dude/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/entertainment/2011/05/05/director-ruben-fleischer-gets-guy-humor-dude/#comments Thu, 05 May 2011 16:02:04 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/05/05/director-ruben-fleischer-gets-guy-humor-dude/ As someone who directed last year’s action-comedy “Zombieland” and MTV’s “Rob and Big,” as well as sketches on “Funny Or Die,” it’s safe to say Ruben Fleischer has a handle on dude-humor. This summer will see the release of his second feature film, “30 Minutes or Less,” which stars the ubiquitous Jesse Eisenberg as a hapless pizza delivery boy who gets tasked, against his will, with robbing a bank with a bomb strapped to his body. It’s a comedy, though. Really. Fleischer promises.

“It’s like a broader comedy version of a Coen Brothers movie,” he says. “To me, it’s like a commercial version of ‘Fargo’ — dumb people doing dumb things with bad results.”

Fleischer assembled a group of buzzworthy comedic talents — including “Eastbound and Down” star  Danny McBride, stand-up pro Nick Swardson and Aziz Ansari of “Parks and Recreation” — for the film. The director’s ear for a good laugh may be well-tuned, but he can’t put his finger on why the Apatowian buddy-comedy trend is so hot right now — or how he knows what’s funny at all.

“Aziz is just an inherently funny person, as are Danny and Nick and Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray [who both starred in ‘Zombieland’],” he explains of his stars. “They are funny people, and so I just want to put them in things and watch them be funny.”

But back to Academy Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg, who is already notorious for playing the neurotic nerd, as he did most famously in “The Social Network” last year. Fleischer assures us that we’ll see a different side of the skittish actor in this film.

“That’s one of the things that he and I are most excited about,” Fleischer says. “[Here] he’s much more of a normal, average, everyday dude who has not lived up to his potential. I think it’s a little bit jarring for audiences to see Jesse being an underachiever and someone who is not neurotic. I think audiences will definitely relate to him and see him in a different light.”
