Communities around Boston were put on lockdown Friday morning as authorities searched for one of the suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, the man the FBI labeled “Suspect 1″ in the investigation, was killed by law enforcement officers during a shootout overnight, according Reuters.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, designated as “Suspect 2,” is still on the run and remains a serious threat. The two suspects were reportedly brothers from Chechnya.

Reuters was providing a live Twitter feed of developments in the case, as was Metro Boston.

Around 10:20 Thursday night, an MIT police officer was shot and killed on campus, the Middlesex County District Attorney said in a statement. An MBTA officer was critically hurt.

A short time later, police received reports of a carjacking by two men who kept their victim inside the car for about half an hour, the statement said.

Police pursued that car to Watertown, where explosives were thrown from the car at police and gunfire was exchanged, the statement said.

“During the exchange of the gunfire, we believe that one of the suspects was struck and ultimately taken into custody. A second suspect was able to flee from that car and there is an active search going on at this point in time,” Col. Timothy Alben, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police, told a news conference.

The first suspect died at Beth Israel Hospital. Doctors said he had gunshot wounds and “blast injuries.”

Officials urged people who live in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Alston/Brighton neighborhoods of Boston to stay inside.

In Watertown, SWAT teams were conducting a door-to-door search. No vehicles were being allowed in or out of the community.

All MBTA service was shut down until further notice. Boston Public Schools and colleges were also closed for the day.

Per BARC’s (aka Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition) Facebook pag, Lena Dunham and her mother Laurie Simmons came into the shelter today to adopt the rescue Repeat, who they will rename to  Lamby.

Lamby is apparently a 1-year-old Cockapoo mix. A BARC volunteer notes in the comments that “if she hadn’t been adopted (they told us she was), I would have had to take her. The sweetest dog, so gentle. Really like a little lamb. So appropriate name!”

A picture of a man duct-taped to his plane seat, with even a strip of tape covering his mouth, was posted on a tumblr account by Andy Ellwood, who wrote he was on the flight with the man when he started acting irrationally and even tried to strangle the woman next to him.

“Passenger drank all of his duty free liquor on the flight from Iceland to JFK yesterday,” Ellwood wrote. “When he became unruly, (i.e. trying to choke the woman next to him and screaming the plane was going to crash), fellow passengers subdued him and tie him up for the rest of the flight. He was escorted off the flight by police when it landed.”

Port Authority spokesman Ron Marsico could not confirm the authenticity of the photo to Metro, but did say a man was escorted off a IcelandAir flight to JFK Thursday evening.

“Port Authority police received reports of an individual being restrained on a flight,” Marsico said. “They went to the gate and they met the plane. [The man] appeared intoxicated.”

Marsico said the man was brought to a local hospital. He was not charged by police.

Lisa Weiss went public in June 2011, revealing an extensive online exchange of sexual messages with Weiner beginning in August 2010, just a month after he married his wife Huma Abedin. Abedin, who was pregnant when the scandal broke, stayed by Weiner’s side, but the couple stepped out of the public spotlight where they proceeded to live a quiet life below the radar, and welcome their son months later.

On a family photo that Weiner posted in September 2012 on his Facebook page, showing him with his wife and young son, Weiss left a rather interesting comment that seems to be the talk of the town today:

So great to see you back! Your wife and son are beautiful! Please let me apologize again for any pain I caused your (sic) or the beautiful Huma… it was unintentional… I still think you are our liberal hero and we need you back in politics!!

The most questionable element to it all, though, is why Weiner and Weiss are still Facebook friends.

Weiner also recently made a quiet comeback to Twitter, lighting up his dormant account with a plea to support the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Rihanna posted a photo of the couple sharing an intimate embrace to Instagram with the caption “i dont wanna leave!!! Killed it tonight baby!!!”

The young pop stars, who were embroiled in a 2009 domestic dispute that made headlines, have been fending off rumors about their reconciliation for weeks, especially after Chris Brown ended his on and off relationship with model Karrueche Tran. Though, recently, RiRi has been more open about the fact that she is spending time with Brown, tweeting a photo just days ago of the him shirtless and passed out face-down in a bed.

The image set off a spur of comments from fans and critics alike after Rihanna seemed to confirm what everyone had already suspected.

“It takes the average woman seven times to leave an abusive relationship for good so this is normal,” one Instagram user commented.

“Aww too cute, happy for y’all!!!!” another user said.

A photo of NYPD Officer Larry DePrimo offering boots and socks to a homeless man in Midtown has gone viral, with nearly 80,000 shares from the department’s Facebook page.

The image was snapped on the night of Nov. 14 by tourist Jennifer Foster who was visiting from Arizona when she was struck by the sight of DePrimo kneeling beside the man, offering him the boots and socks and even putting them on his feet.

“Right when I was about to approach, one of your officers came up behind him,” Foster said, according to the NYPD’s Facebook page. “The officer said, ‘I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let’s put them on and take care of you.’”

The photo was shared 79,270 times by Thursday morning and garnered more than 324,000 “likes.”

“You, Mr. Officer, are amazing & show compassion beyond your call of duty. I hope you & your family are blessed ten-fold,” one Facebook user said. “By this simple act, you exemplified what we all should strive to be – compassionate humans who care.”

“An officer AND a gentleman,” another user added. 

The department is encouraging other citizens to send in their NYPD snapshots.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said this morning that city inspectors deemed the crane “secure” for now, though changing weather conditions could still effect safety for those in the area.

The crane, attached to a highrise apartment building under construction at 157 West 57th St. near Seventh Ave. in Manhattan, partially collapsed as wind speeds from Hurricane Sandy picked up yesterday afternoon, FDNY officials said.

The crane can still be seen dangling near the 70th floor of One57 tower. The top floors of the luxury highrise are under construction and surrounded by heavy scaffolding.

FDNY officials told Metro no injuries were reported. Police evacuated residents from the building, as well as surrounding buildings and the streets below the crane, according to the NYPD.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg addressed the possibility of hurricane damage to construction site Monday morning, warning that extreme winds could make for dangerous scenarios.

“We have worked very hard to make sure all cranes and construction sites are battered down, and we’ve had so far no indication of any debris blowing off a construction site,” Bloomberg said. “But as the winds get worse, our precautions get tested more, and you never know.”

He added, “There’s no reason to jeopardize your lives. It’s just dangerous to be out on the streets when the wind is this high.”

Sources insist getting picked up for allegedly striking a pedestrian with her car outside a New York hotel and then hurrying inside caused her pre-existing walking pneumonia to flare up again. Lohan is currently taking antibiotics for the infection, according to he father.

After so much attention was paid to her recent weight gain last week, Lady Gaga is baring all. She posted a stark photo of herself in yellow lingerie on her Little Monster Web site with a caption that reads, “Bulimia and anorexia since I was 15.” And over the weekend, Gaga took to Twitter to inspire her fans with a quote she attributed to Marilyn Monroe: “To all the girls who think you’re ugly because you’re not a size 0, you’re the beautiful ones. It’s society who’s ugly.”

Don’t expect Miley Cyrus and fiancé Liam Hemsworth to rush down the aisle anytime soon. “I already feel married. I know we are forever. I don’t need the paper right now,” Cyrus tells Us Weekly. “I don’t know when we will get married yet. We are still enjoying being engaged. Lindsay Lohan is reportedly playing sick as a means to get out of being in “Scary Movie 5″ after deciding the script makes fun of her too much, insisting that she has walking Pneumonia, according to Page Six. “Lindsay missed every meeting she had for the film, including script reads and wardrobe meetings,” a source says. “Then she missed her flight to Atlanta on Sunday to shoot the movie. The producers had been getting signs Friday that she was a mess, and would not be fit to work.” But Lohan’s rep insists there’s nothing fishy going on. “Lindsay is fulfilling all of her obligations for the film,” rep Steve Honig says.

A year after coming out of the closet, Zachary Quinto is opening up about his relationship with “Glee” and “Boss” actor Jonathan Groff, telling Out magazine, “I’m incredibly happy, I’m incredibly lucky.” Quinto says he’s feeling especially good about being in a relationship because of a rough time he had following the death of his father. “I found myself in a pattern of being attracted to people who were somehow unavailable, and what I realized was that I was protecting myself because I equated the idea of connection and love with trauma and death,” he explains. “I had to do a lot of work on the couch to really get to a place where I was able to show up to a relationship with someone who was actually capable of being in one — and that took a lot of trial and error.”

Mila Kunis got a nasty surprise when she found herself trapped in an elevator with 11 other people recently in New York, according to Page Six. “They were stuck in the elevator for 45 minutes and it became very hot in there,” a source says. “Mila and everyone else remained calm. There were firetrucks outside, and firefighters helped them get out.”

According to the Daily News, Rihanna’s grandmother, Clara ‘Dolly’ Brathwaite, died of cancer earlier this year. She was 80 years old.

Speaking at the scene where police were working to gain access to the apartment, Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates said: “His apartment is booby-trapped. We are trying to determine how to disarm the flammable or explosive material. We could be here for hours or days. The pictures are fairly disturbing. It looks very sophisticated, how it’s booby-trapped. It could be a very long wait.”

Meanwhile, Denver’s ABC affiliate posted the first photo of suspect James Holmes, obtained from the University of Colorado. He was a reportedly a student at the college’s medical school about a year ago, but dropped out of the neuroscience graduate program.

Zimmerman launched the site in early April in an attempt to collect donations for his legal fees and living expenses. On the site, which seemed to be designed by someone with no design experience at all, Zimmerman stated that he had been unable to work or support himself since Trayvon Martin’s death on February 26.

In the weeks before Zimmerman was charged, outcry across the country reached a fever pitch as thousands of activists and protesters demanded justice for Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman has maintained that he shot Martin in self-defense, even as he faces a charge of second degree murder.

Could the substantial amount of money Zimmerman has been able to raise be representative of a shift in perception? In the last week, a photo surfaced taken moments after Martin’s death, showing the back of Zimmerman’s head bleeding from several wounds. That photo could prove crucial in court for Zimmerman’s self-defense case, in which he claims Martin was attacking him and bashing his head on the ground before he pulled the trigger.

A recent Reuters report offers a glimpse into Zimmerman’s life leading up to the shooting.  It includes new details never known by the public, like how a police officer advised Zimmerman to buy a gun after a neighbor’s aggressive dog threatened his wife, and how, as a young insurance agent, he partnered his business with a friend — an African-American man.

While Zimmerman remains at the center of the most controversial court case in the country right now, the public continues to learn more about the man who claims he shot a teenager to death in a backyard inside a Florida suburb because he was being attacked. Does Zimmerman’s wealth of donations indicate that he is slowly turning public hatred into public support?

Nadya Suleman said she received death threats after filing for welfare from the state of California. She claimed $2,000 worth of food stamps per month was simply not enough to support her and her 14 children. How, then, can Suleman afford $520 in hair services?

TMZ has posted a photo of a check the Octomom signed over to her hair stylist as payment for two haircuts and a Brazilian blowout. The stylist, Stephanie, said Octomom’s kids were living in such “squalor” that she went to the police and filed a report.

Octomom’s continually questionable priorities are once again at the center of attention — Stephanie said the plumbing was broken at Octomom’s home and her kids were using portable toilets in the backyard — this after Octomom deemed the $150 needed to fix the pipes too expensive.

Additionally — and if this is true it’s decidedly the worst part of this story, Stephanie said that while she was there, Octomom kept her kids locked in a bedroom, lodging a char against the knob to keep the door closed. She snapped a pic, which TMZ posted.

According to police, a 34-year-old woman told officers it happened while she was riding a Manhattan-bound L-train on April 18. She said the man boarded at the Montrose Avenue station in Brooklyn and began masturbating while looking at her. He got off the train at Union Square.

The woman was able to capture a photo of the man on her cell phone, which she sent to police. The suspect is between 20 and 25 years old. He is about 6-foot and 175 pounds. He was wearing a black baseball cap, a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue jogging pants.

This is the second suspect in two days police have announced they’re looking for in connection with lewd acts on the subway. On Tuesday, police released a photo of this man, wanted for using his cell phone to snap a picture beneath a woman’s skirt on the 4 train.

Officers were approached by a 24-year-old woman on April 18 who told them that a man had taken a photo beneath her skirt on the 4 train. She used her own cell phone to take a picture of the suspect, which she sent to police.

The man is described as 30 to 40 years old, about 5’5″, and 150 pounds. He has brown eyes, short black hair, and a mustache. He was wearing a black and orange sweatshirt.

New Yorker Ross Berenson tweeted a photo of a form given to him by the TSA after his luggage was inexplicably damaged after a flight from LAX to JFK. The form offered instructions on filing a complaint, which included submitting a receipt, attaching a boarding pass, … oh, and also to “go to hellllll.”

That’s right — the form included a nice, little handwritten note from … someone… instructing Berenson to cast himself to eternal damnation. He told Gothamist that he was pretty surprised by the curt note, considering his exchange with TSA workers was relatively cordial.

“Everyone was very helpful and nice. I didn’t realize the form said ‘Go to hell’ until I got on the subway,” Berenson said. “I’m pretty laid back, but seeing an official form like this say ‘Go to hell’ is pretty shocking.”

Berenson also noted that the form seemed to be a photocopy, so it’s likely that other unsuspecting passengers were subject to the strongly-worded instructions, too.

This is just one of several hand-written notes that passengers claim they have received from TSA agents. Who could forget the infamous “GET YOUR FREAK ON GIRL,” message scribbled onto an inspection notice in the luggage of a woman who packed a vibrator? And the “C’mon Son” note left by an agent who found a bag of weed in the suitcase of rapper Freddie Gibbs (oh, and the agent let him keep it, too).

Still, things could be worse for the TSA. At least none of its agents have recently been implicated in a Colombian hooker scandal, which is more than fellow government agency, the Secret Service, can say…

ABC News reported that the photo was taken just three minutes after Martin was shot and killed. The photographer who snapped the photo said Zimmerman asked him to call his wife. When the photographer asked what he should tell her, he said Zimmerman said, “Man, just tell her I shot someone.”

The photographer did not witness the scuffle, but said that he could hear it.

Zimmerman told police that he shot Martin in self-defense after the teen broke his nose and bashed his head against the ground. However, that claim was debated within the media after surveillance video was released that didn’t clearly show any injuries on Zimmerman the night of the shooting.

A police report did include an officer’s summary of the incident, including that he noticed Zimmerman’s head was wet and that he was bleeding.

Zimmerman, who was charged with second degree murder, is in court seeking bond today. On the stand, he addressed the Martin family, saying, “I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was.”

Jason Segel is lobbying hard for the title of Most Adorable Boyfriend, as the “How I Met Your Mother” apparently tapes photos of girlfriend Michelle Williams to the back of his iPhone case, according to the Daily Mail. Segel was spotted carrying the personalized phone in L.A. this weekend. A photo alone would be sweet, sure, but Segel also has the phrase “I love you” scribbled over and over again around the pictures. “They’re much more serious than everyone thinks,” a source says. “They’re really happy.”

Though Emma Roberts and Chord Overstreet supposedly ended their relationship three months ago, the actors have been giving it another go and “have been hanging out,” according to Us Weekly. “They’re seeing where it goes,” a source says. “They liked each other, but fought a lot. 26-year-old Helian Williams of Newark, who has since been fired from CareOne in Livingston, is accused of snapping the below-the-belt photo and then sending it to 21-year-old Michele Walker. Prosecutors then say Walker posted the photo on her Facebook page.

Ironically, CareOne’s mission statement says, “We treat residents, their families and each other with respect, dignity and compassion,” as Gawker points out.

“No one should be made to suffer humiliation, particularly at the hands of someone responsible for his or her care,” said Acting Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Ronald Chillemi, according to NBC.

Williams and Walker are both facing third-degree invasion of privacy and third-degree conspiracy charges.

We still think of Fanning as the adorable, little child from “I am Sam,” so this controversy is weird for us. The ad has been the subject of some debate in the Metro newsroom: Yes, Fanning is wearing a short dress and, yes, she is holding a large perfume bottle that’s a bit questionably placed.

Some [Editor's note: OK, it was me] may ask, “How else would you hold a perfume bottle on your lap if you were sitting in that position?”

Well, let’s see –  resting on a thigh? A hip bone, perhaps? But probably not sticking out from between our legs. That would be far too uncomfortable, most likely. To be honest, we probably would never be holding an over-sized bottle of Marc Jacobs perfume on our laps whilst sitting on the floor, so it’s hard to say.  

What’s more surprising, though, is that the U.K., of all places, is so offended by the ad. This is coming from a country, after all, where naked women grace the pages of free daily newspapers. However, those women are all 18-years-old; Fanning is three months younger, which makes all the difference to the Brits, apparently. Fanning, though, is not the first celebrity to get nixed from British advertising for a “suggestive” ad. Beyoncé, too, had a commercial for her fragrance “Heat” pulled from the airwaves after it was ruled too hot for TV, according to E!.     

It’s not like Dakota Fanning is showing that kind of skin, so we’ll just have to wait and see whether her ad finds its way back into British magazines come February 23 — her 18th birthday.

Meanwhile, Rogers testified that it is highly unlikely that the singer administered the lethal dose of Propofol to himself.

Murray’s defense has said MJ gave himself the drug and stopped breathing during the two minutes that it took Murray to go to the restroom and return.

Rogers said he doubts that would have been enough time for the singer to inject himself and have the drug take effect.
