They say football is a religion.

Well, if that is really true, then there is a certain church in Las Vegas taking it to a whole another level. Pastor Randall can be heard at Remnant Ministries most Sundays, spreading the gospel and sharing life lessons to his wide-eyed congregation. The church is open to believers of all ages, races, denominations – and yes, even to Philadelphia Eagles fans.

In fact, some in Pastor Randall’s flock show up wearing midnight green, as they hinge on every word of Randall Cunningham’s sermon.

“People come from New Jersey, Delaware, and they say, ‘You’re really a pastor.’ They see the tears coming down my face and understand my faith,” Cunningham told Metro. “They tell me, ‘If I lived out here, I would definitely come to your church, and I say, ‘Come on out, we got tons of housing [in Nevada].’”

The former Eagles quarterback was told he would be a pastor as a child, something Cunningham calls a “prophetic message.” The road wasn’t always easy for him as he struggled with temptation early in his career. After some soul searching – and prodding from former teammate Reggie White – Cunningham accepted the Prayer of Salvation in 1987.

“Reggie [White] held me accountable for my sins and told me to be strong about my faith,” Cunningham said. “He would get in my face and challenged me when I was doing something that wasn’t right to get it right.”

Cunningham’s new book, “Lay It Down,” recently hit bookshelves. In it, he details how his faith carried him through some very tough times, including the accidental drowning death of his son, Christian, in 2010. Instead of turning his back on God at that moment, Cunningham jumped in his car and screamed, “Hallelujah,” at the top of his lungs.

Cunningham never doubted God, even when he was benched by the Vikings after just five games in 1998. He called it a “test.” He was tested often during his 11 seasons here, but he credits Philadelphia for turning him into the man he is today.

“I’m so thankful to God for sending me to Philadelphia,” he said. “I wanted to stay on the West Coast, stay in the sun and play golf but I matured so much as a person there because people are expecting greatness out of you. Chick-fil-A has denied to Metro that the chain has anything to do with a viral photo of a hiring notice that boasts a religious and homophobic agenda.

He explained that “man has dominion over the Earth” and “unlike the Earth, we’re intelligent and we can actually manage things.” But environmentalists, Santorum says, view man “just like any other species out there.” They spend too much time “worshiping the Earth” and not enough time worrying about “man and his light.”  So, Rick Santorum rides in cars, flies in airplanes, protects his family’s health with modern medicine, receives his campaign funding through a worldwide electronic banking system and communicates with voters via TV and the Internet — while simultaneously believing that his incoherent extrapolations from the book of Genesis are an admissible argument against science? These wonders of modernity would be impossible if millions of scientists, each devoting their lives to the discovery of counterintuitive truths, had not persevered in convincing a skeptical world that its traditional understandings of how things worked — reeking of superstition and religious dogma — were bitterly mistaken. What Santorum fails to understand is that climate science is no different than the rest of science — it is produced by the very same research methods and rigorous evaluative standards as all other science. In fact, this is precisely what makes something “science,” and not speculation, religion or, dare I say, politics — it’s called the scientific method. When a scientist claims to have used the scientific method, the other scientists make no leaps of faith. Instead, they scrutinize every aspect of the research and hunt relentlessly for the smallest mistake, for any remotely questionable data. Only after the vast majority of a researcher’s peers, each poring over not only the research itself but every criticism of it, can find no flaw in the researcher’s adherence to the scientific method — only then — can the findings be cautiously said to have produced a scientific fact. Climate change research has undergone the same rigorous review process as research that has led to the space program, the prevention of polio, the Internet and even the carbon fuel extraction and consumption techniques that scientists now identify as a primary cause of climate change. The fact that “97.5 percent of climatologists who actively publish research on climate change” have reviewed such research without objection should motivate even someone as ignorant as Rick Santorum to pause, if only momentarily, to consider whether he is truly willing to gamble the fate of the world and all of God’s creatures on his unsubstantiated gut feeling that either (1) all of these scientists are, on just this one topic, somehow mistaken, or (2) Jesus will arrive in the nick of time and, sailing across the bubbling oceans atop the last dwindling slab of glacial ice, whisk the righteous away to a better place where there aren’t any consequences for one’s actions — or for one’s beliefs. Rick Santorum should spend less time with his bible and more time at a biblioteca.

Santorum believes that climate change science is a hoax, and this week he offered some of his reasoning. He explained that “man has dominion over the Earth” and “unlike the Earth, we’re intelligent and we can actually manage things.” But environmentalists, Santorum says, view man “just like any other species out there.” They spend too much time “worshiping the Earth” and not enough time worrying about “man and his light.”

So, Rick Santorum rides in cars, flies in airplanes, protects his family’s health with modern medicine, receives his campaign funding through a worldwide electronic banking system and communicates with voters via TV and the Internet — while simultaneously believing that his incoherent extrapolations from the book of Genesis are an admissible argument against science?

These wonders of modernity would be impossible if millions of scientists, each devoting their lives to the discovery of counterintuitive truths, had not persevered in convincing a skeptical world that its traditional understandings of how things worked — reeking of superstition and religious dogma — were bitterly mistaken.

What Santorum fails to understand is that climate science is no different than the rest of science — it is produced by the very same research methods and rigorous evaluative standards as all other science. In fact, this is precisely what makes something “science,” and not speculation, religion or, dare I say, politics — it’s called the scientific method.

We got such great responses from Thursday’s column on the religious right’s war on Obama’s supposed war on religion — both congratulatory and deeply opposed — that we decided to return to the issue this weekend. But we’re not the only ones: Republican legislators have doubled down on the culture war, holding a House panel Thursday aimed at determining whether the Obama administration is violating religious liberty with its policy requiring all employers to provide health insurance — including birth control — for women.

So it was that Rep. Darrell Issa, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, convened a room full of holy men to get to the bottom of how, exactly, the Obama administration’s insurance mandate infringes on employers’ rights to restrict women’s full access to reproductive health options.

(Sandra Fluke, a Georgetown University student whose health plan lacks contraception coverage, was forwarded by Democrats as a lone female voice on the panel, but Issa declared her “not qualified” to testify with the eminently qualified male panel on issues of birth control and menstrual cramps.)

Beyond the obvious absurdity of excluding women from a discussion on reproductive rights, the evidence from Obama’s presidency simply does not support right-wing claims of an administration war on religion. In reality — you know, the world in which statements one makes are borne out by actual facts? — Obama has been very friendly toward religious institutions, handing out hundreds of millions to faith-based charities through budget items and stimulus measures.

More important, however, is the fact that Catholic scripture does not specifically condemn birth control — and therefore the insurance mandate. Though Pope Pius XI, in 1930, argued that opposition to contraception had doctrinal support, recent church authorities disagree.

All people have a right to personally decide matters of faith. But forcing beliefs on others — exactly the crime bishops and GOP?legislators put on Obama’s head — is not a right. Republicans have a point, though: There’s a fine line between religious freedom and religious tyranny. They simply mistook which side of it they were on.

Religious groups are fighting for their right to worship in New York City public schools, but opponents say they don’t have a prayer.

Churches and civil rights groups testified at a Council education hearing Thursday about whether religious services should be held in public schools.

Right now, about 160 congregations meet in public schools around the city, on the weekends and in gyms and auditoriums. But in June, the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld a controversial decision by the New York City Department of Education to prohibit the services.

The Council is mulling a resolution that supports a state bill, which would give greater flexibility for school districts to allow church groups. Even if this passes, however, its ability to overrule the federal court decision would likely be challenged in court, New York Civil Liberties Union spokeswoman Jennifer Carnig said.

Congregations currently using public school space have until Feb. 12 to find another place of worship.
“Religious organizations should not be treated any differently from any other community organization,” city Comptroller John Liu said in a statement to the Council, comparing churches to other groups that use schools after hours, such as sports teams, community boards and cultural groups.

The NYCLU argued that services send the message that the government favors Christian churches over other faiths. “Turning our public schools into churches undermines the core American principle of separation of church and state,” NYCLU director Donna Lieberman said.

Now that friendly man from the Royal Wedding is doing it, too!

Britain's Archibishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, is the latest voice in the chorus questioning the decision to kill bin Laden:

I think the killing of an unarmed man is always going to leave a very uncomfortable feeling because it doesn't look as if justice is seen to be done. In those circumstances I think it's also true that the different versions of events that have emerged in recent days have not done a great deal to help. I don't know the full details any more than anyone else does. But I do believe that in such circumstances when we are faced with someone who was manifestly a war criminal in terms of the atrocities inflicted it is important that justice is seen to be served.

Williams, last seen marrying Prince William and Kate Middleton in Westminster Abbey, is the first European religious leader to speak out against the assassination of bin Laden.

Do you agree with Williams' argument, or do you think justice was served by shooting bin Laden in the head?

Nevermind the rumors of slavery and abuse — church officials say Scientology is gaining young followers in the Big Apple.

“False reports about Scientology come from people with an ax to grind,” said the Rev. John Carmichael, president of the Times Square church.

The number of people under 35 taking their first course in Scientology has doubled, from 200 in 2009 to 400 in 2010, said Carmichael.

“There’s so much bad PR,” said Scientologist Adam Shuty, 33, a personal trainer and actor. “I think my parents and sister were a little concerned.”

Shuty began taking courses in 2005. He visits the church daily, taking advantage of “auditing” (spiritual counseling) and “purification” (a vitamin, exercise and sauna regimen).

“As life became more difficult and complex, I started looking for something else,” said Queens law school grad Thalia Harrari, 26.

Peter King, the chairman of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee who convened hearings to examine Islamic radicalization, has accused the Muslim community of refusing to cooperate with law enforcement and charged that preaching in some U.S. mosques was leading to radicalization.

The hearings spotlight increasing concerns about the threat of home-grown terrorism and attempts by al Qaeda to recruit from mosques in the United States to carry out attacks in this country and abroad.

Some lawmakers said King’s approach unfairly demonized a single religious group, tarnishing them in their communities and instilling a sense of fear that deters them from coming forward to help.

King denied accusations that the hearings were “radical or un-American” and said there was no comparison between the threat from al Qaeda and that from neo-Nazis, environmental extremists and “isolated madmen.” ]]>
Muslim Americans must do more to combat Islamic radicalization as al Qaeda targets them to help carry out terrorism plots, a lawmaker said on Thursday as he convened hearings critics said unfairly singled out Muslims.

“I’m here to support Muslims,” “Entourage” star Adrian Grenier told Metro. “People should be able to worship whatever religion they want to without worrying about a congressional hearing.”

The controversial hearings will begin Thursday, March 10. King, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said the Muslim community has not been as helpful as they could be in ferreting out potential terrorists and extremists.

Critics, however, such as Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, a Muslim, said talking about extremism is fine, but Islam shouldn’t be singled out.

Simmons on hate, Rep. King

Times square. Hip hop mogul Russell Simmons led the “I am Muslim, too” rally yesterday.

“What Peter King doesn’t understand is that hate spreads very quickly,” Simmons said. “We’ve done research every year on ethnic and religious relations, and this past 18 months things have taken a nasty turn.”

“There’s more anti-Semitism, more homophobia, more black-on-black hate and crime — and Peter King is fueling all of that.”

A Vatican spokesman said digital confession could never take the place of admitting to sins to a priest in the flesh.

“One cannot speak in any way of confessing via iPhone,” the spokesman said.

The app, Confession, takes believers through the sacrament and claims to offer a “personalized examination of conscience for each user.”

“Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not my sister,” Bentley said at a local church. ]]>
BIRMINGHAM – Non-Christians in Alabama are worrying they might not be properly represented in after newly elected Gov. Robert Bentley told a crowd shortly after his inaugural ceremony that non-believers are not part of his family.

“Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I’m telling you, you’re not my brother and you’re not my sister,” Bentley said at a local church.
