I am not a skinny girl — never have been naturally. Well, I was extremely thin at age 14 or 15 as an aspiring ballerina, but I was on the starvation diet, and that was decades ago. My adult life hasn’t been as skinny. Michael says I am "womanly." In a man's words, this means curvy and not thin. Or perhaps voluptuous is a better term.

Even though I adore fashion, trends, and especially bargain hunting, I have a love-hate relationship with shopping. The challenge in finding affordable, well-fitted garments that don’t require major alterations is sheer frustration at times. Where have all the good clothes gone? Obviously, they don’t live uptown.

Who fits into the clothing of today other than self-starved women and super models? This could never be me. I love food entirely too much.

Some days I can pull it off, and others — well, honestly I don't have the time or the energy. So I settle for what I call a frump day, and only hope that I don’t run into Kevin Bacon again.

A frump day can consist of sweats, baggy jeans, and big shirts over leggings, or even (I am embarrassed to admit it) pajamas and wooly socks. When it’s freezing cold outside, or I’m in a serious writing mode, I can’t pay attention to my wardrobe. But, lack of a deadline and mild weather bring out the best in my fashion sense.

As much as I adore certain brands, my curvaceous figure doesn’t always cooperate. Call me vain because I am, but I refuse to wear an extra-large, even if I love the design. Zara is a perfect example of fantastic style and affordable pricing. There’s only one problem: their clothing doesn’t fit me. As much as I love the look, even the larges don’t fit my bod. Perhaps I could find shirts if I increased my size, but the pants are another story. I can’t get them over my knees. Who in the H fits in smalls? 12 year-olds?

Recently, I attempted to try on a Zara dress and I couldn’t get it past my shoulders. It never made it to the boobs, so it wasn’t my fleshy figure fighting. Why does clothing seem to look bigger on the hanger? Even though medium was printed on the tag, the cute sheath was cut like an extra-small. A larger size might have made it to the chest, but certainly would have gotten hung up somewhere on the way down.

As a result, I’ve permanently boycotted that store because it does nothing for my self-esteem, nor does it expand my wardrobe. Sorry Zara. But I will continue to dream of fitting into your chic dresses.

Couture clothing presents the same challenges. Often, I buy a size too large because I never want to be one of those women who think a three-sizes-too- small pair of pants actually fit. I don’t bother trying on my typical size 6 either. Wearing any couture garment, I am an 8 at the very least. On occasion, I need to move into the double digits.

About six months ago, I finally purchased a pair of skinny jeans. I’ve always been a wide-legged kind of girl, but the tapered pants have been in for at least five years now. I was long overdue. Much to my surprise, the Uniqlo dark denims made it past the ankles, across the knees, over the tookus, and around the hips, landing right where they belonged. Gotta love Lycra.

This past weekend, I tried on a few vintage pieces from the 1960s. Obviously, most in that era wore a smaller bra size. I told myself this as the buttons were popping. Girdles were the norm fifty years ago, and comfort was a stranger. Did women actually wear full body armor to squeeze into a smaller size? This must be the problem with girls today. We actually like to breathe while playing dress-up.

Body dimensions have shifted over the decades too. Typical measurements had a ten-inch difference 30 or 40 years ago. A 36-26-36 was a perfectly proportioned woman. Now it’s something like 36-28-39. Apparently, the pear is in.

Fashion appeals to skinny girls, super-models, buxom bodies, full-figured, and all those in between. Being happy with yourself starts in your head and doesn’t end in the mirror, so we all need to lighten up when it comes to our sizes. Small, medium, large, or extra shouldn’t matter.

Whether frumpy or fashionable, wear it well and hold your head high as you sashay down Broadway. No matter what, confidence is sexy and will always be in style.

In New York City, the street is our runway. Fashion surrounds us, and trends are born. Developing one’s own sense of style and breaking the rules is expected and accepted in Manhattan. But living in the vogue capital isn’t easy for wannabe fashionistas like me. The pressure to look good is always on high. To some, it’s second nature. For others, it’s work.

The former congressman could be rocking the ‘stache in honor of Movember, the charity mustache-growing season that takes place in November to raise awareness for men’s health.

More likely, though, it’s a disguise to shield him from the public eye following a shameful and embarrassing sexting scandal that cost him his career.

He’s not fooling anyone. We see you behind that ‘stache, Anthony Weiner!

Cellphone signals tracking shoppers? http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/local/2011/11/27/cellphone-signals-tracking-shoppers/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/local/2011/11/27/cellphone-signals-tracking-shoppers/#comments Sun, 27 Nov 2011 20:00:48 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/11/27/cellphone-signals-tracking-shoppers/ @AlisonatMetro.

Careful while shopping this holiday season — someone might be watching your every move.

Major retailers are considering tracking customers’ locations in stores, using anonymous signals transmitted by their cell phone antennas, Sen. Charles Schumer warned yesterday.

Stores like JCPenney and Home Depot are considering “footpath” technology, which enables store officials to track customer locations, he said. Two malls in California and Virginia adopted the technology, but halted implementation just before Black Friday throngs hit, Schumer said.

But stores or malls in New York could implement the technology without telling consumers — meaning you could be tailed and never know.

By tracking customers’ whereabouts, and by seeing where in stores they head first, retailers would be able to better position their products to consumers’ walking routes, proponents of the controversial service explain.

No phone numbers are available in the anonymous tracking, but Schumer said people should be alerted before their location is noted.

“Personal cellphones are just that — personal,” Schumer said. “It shouldn’t be up to the consumer to turn their cellphone off when they walk into the mall to ensure they aren’t being virtually tailed.”

Your holiday shopping mission: Find the ski jacket your girlfriend has been coveting in her very popular, usually-sells-out size and in the color she likes — and by the way, it’s from last season. Luckily, you have a magic wand in the form of TheFind.com at your disposal.

Black Friday: Avoid the dreaded overspend http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/money/2011/11/23/black-friday-avoid-the-dreaded-overspend/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/money/2011/11/23/black-friday-avoid-the-dreaded-overspend/#comments Wed, 23 Nov 2011 12:06:09 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/11/23/black-friday-avoid-the-dreaded-overspend/ Finding your gift inspiration at the mall. Make sure you have a plan before you hit the store. If not, you could make an impulse purchase or be more likely to shop outside your budget. It's a good idea to check out deals online to compare and contrast before you head to the mall. 2. Putting your gifts on layaway. Layaway might seem like an attractive option at the time, but what it really means is that you probably can't afford the gift to begin with. You'll likely be charged fees for the luxury of paying it off in installments. Nobody wants you to go into debt over a present for them. 3. Springing for the fancy gift wrapping. All of that wrapping paper, bags and ribbons can add up to costing more than the gift did in the first place. A cheaper and more personal option? Using newspaper or letting your kids decorate white wrapping paper. 4. Hosting a gig holiday party all by yourself. Entertaining is an expensive endeavor that can easily add up to hundreds of dollars even for a small get-together. Tis the season to be jolly -- not broke! If you're dying to host, try a potluck or stick to one signature drink for the night instead of a huge variety of booze. 5. Dressing up your house like Santa’s workshop. Aside from being a bit weird, it's also a budget buster to overdecorate your home. Use handmade decorations or trade with family and friends for a fresh look each year. When it comes to lights, remember your electric bill! Try to limit how long they're twinkling and don't leave them on overnight.

Americans will spend $465.6 billion this holiday season. That’s a 2.8 percent increase from last year, according to the National Retail Federation. Great news for the economy, but not so great for the wallet of you, the consumer, who is spending even more.

Temptation is great: First, Black Friday door-busters, then three-day weekend sales and even Cyber Monday! If you want to reign it in this year, the credit counseling non-profit Take Charge America has put together a list of overspending pitfalls. Avoid these common blunders, and it could help you stay within your means.

1. Finding your gift inspiration at the mall. Make sure you have a plan before you hit the store. If not, you could make an impulse purchase or be more likely to shop outside your budget. It’s a good idea to check out deals online to compare and contrast before you head to the mall.

1. The concept for the “6 Packs/9 Lives” calendar is pretty simple: Hot guys and cute cats make every month that much better. 7. Even if she doesn’t usually wear perfume, Viva La Juicy’s flirty little bottle has an irresistible Paris-after-hours appeal. $98 (3.4 oz.), at Macy’s stores
8. Big bulky terrycloth robes are for your mom. Betsey Johnson’s adorable little velour and satin robe definitely isn’t. $89, at Bloomingdale’s stores and www.betseyjohnson.com

1. While we’re sure some dried fruit or nuts would be ideal fuel, come on — it’s officially the holidays. Pretzel Crisps’ new Dark Chocolate & Peppermint flavor are the perfect combo of salty, sweet and festive to have waiting in your car. $3, at various supermarkets
2. Bring a bottle of water so you don’t fall victim to sugary, high-calorie (but so delicious) mall lemonade. Mavea’s home filtration system makes for seriously pure H2O, but we also love the look of their pitcher, which is sleek enough to make a guest appearance at holiday dinner parties. $35 at Macy’s and Williams-Sonoma stores
3. Did Thanksgiving dinner include an after-party? Blowfish is a new FDA regulated hangover remedy that you dissolve in water and swill the morning after. Follow with bagels for best results. $12 for six doses www.forhangovers.com

4. Make a wind-down bubble bath extra sweet with Vitabath’s new Cupcake Couture collection, available in scents such as Luscious Lemon Creme and Dreamy Pink Frosting. $10 each, Ulta and Bed, Bath & Beyond stores
5. We weren’t going to recommend a bubble bath without candles. Crabtree & Evelyn’s Noel candle has a delightful Christmas mix of cranberry, evergreen and cinnamon scents. $45, www.crabtree-evelyn.com
6. Don’t think we forgot the bubble bath bubbly. The “magnum” bottle of Mionetto Prosecco Brut contains two bottles’ worth of the dry, apple-kissed sparkling wine. It was, after all, a long day. $25, www.mionettousa.com

Shop smart on Black Friday http://www.metro.us/newyork/lifestyle/2011/11/20/shop-smart-on-black-friday/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/lifestyle/2011/11/20/shop-smart-on-black-friday/#comments Sun, 20 Nov 2011 19:34:57 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2011/11/20/shop-smart-on-black-friday/ Have a plan
“One of the most important things you can do is plan ahead and find out what the deals are going to be across several different stores,” says Woroch. “Let’s say there’s a huge discount on a TV at Target — call ahead and ask how many they have in stock. Map out a route, or go to a mall where there are a variety of stores.” Hit the road early
You’ll want to set the alarm for a disturbing hour not just for the deals, but to ensure a leisurely day. “It pays to be out there early because the door-busters will be limited in quantity. The earlier you shop, the more time you have to hit retailers and feel like you can get lunch. That’s important — you should also enjoy the crazy holiday shopping frenzy.” Take advantage of price-matching
“Remember that big merchants like Sears, Home Depot and Wal-Mart are really beefing up their price-matching guarantees. They’ll meet or beat a competitor’s price. Have your smartphone with you to download and present barcodes that cashiers can price-match while you’re at the store.” Load up on apps
There are a ton of apps out there to help you shop savvy. Woroch recommends Amazon’s free Price Check app — which allows you to scan barcodes and compare them to in-store prices — and Sale Saver, a supercalculator that computes the actual price of an item after that additional 20 percent off, sales tax and coupons. But the gold standard is Coupon Sherpa, which synchs with your GPS to find paperless coupons, which cashiers can scan right off your phone. Only buy what you need
“Retailers are already out there offering deals,” says Woroch. “They want to create a sense of urgency — but they’ll offer that 40 percent off again. Do your research, know how much things cost and take advantage of a deal only when you need it.” ]]>
For some people, the idea of waking up at 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving to battle mall crowds is about as appealing as Tofurkey. But for others, even in the age of Cyber Monday and free shipping, it’s all about the hunt.

“Every year we see an increase of people turning to online shopping, but with Black Friday you still get lots of crowds,” says Andrea Woroch, a consumer and money-saving expert for Kinoli Inc. “There are people who like to find those door-busting deals, and sure enough, there are still great deals to be had out there.”

That said, even Black Friday die-hards can learn a little from their tech-savvy counterparts. Here are Woroch’s top tips for shopping smart in the midst of retail madness.

Have a plan

Over the years, Nails Inc. has developed something of a cult-like following for its vast range of colors (now with more than 40 shades, including 3-D glitter polishes, all of which are named after locations in the U.K.), fashion tie-ins (Nails Inc. creates special shades for London fashion shows) and — the reason we are so drawn to them — the adorable bottle.

Even cuter: Each season, four new colors in the line come packaged with crystal bottle caps. We quite fancy it.

This summer, when you and your out-of-town guest hit the museum circuit, make sure stop by Kiehl’s. The iconic New York-based skin care company recently launched an interactive retrospective in its flagship store at 109 Third Ave. to celebrate 160 years in business. From now until August 31, customers dropping in can learn about the brand’s history while simultaneously learning about New York (Kiehl’s is even older than the Empire State Building!), snag free samples and, best of all, take retro pics in their snazzy motorcycle photo booth.

Marka Hansen, president of Gap North America since 2007, is leaving Friday and will be replaced by an insider to be named shortly, Gap said yesterday.

Hansen — a 24-year company veteran who held top roles at Gap, Banana Republic and in the International division — was a merchandiser charged with attracting new design talent to bring the most appealing line of clothing into stores and simplifying operations.

Gap, which began in 1969 in San Francisco as a seller of jeans, grew to be the best-known retailer in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s with its combination of khaki pants and white T-shirts that defined casual American style.

But that luster eventually faded as more competition entered the market, while a series of executive changes and confusion over strategy soon translated to lackluster clothing on racks that did not appeal to Gap’s loyal customers.

Impatient over the slow pace of its sales recovery, Gap Inc. said the head of Gap North America will step down as the apparel brand tries to reinvigorate its merchandise and flagging stock price.

The majority of the city’s big supermarkets, from Whole Foods to C-Town, don’t display proper prices on items; tax food items that are not taxable such as medicine and milk; and use inaccurate check-out scanners, the Department of Consumer Affairs revealed yesterday.

From August through December 2010, the DCA inspected 500 supermarkets citywide. The most common violation was that many food items did not have price tags on them — particularly troubling, given that nearly 1 in 3 times supermarkets got it wrong at the cash register, said DCA Commissioner Jonathan Mintz.

The charged supermarkets could face more than $310,000 in fines to the city. Shoppers who think they are getting overcharged at supermarkets can file a complaint with 311.
