Cleaning lady accused of stealing train in Sweden, crashing into apartments http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/international/2013/01/15/cleaning-lady-accused-of-stealing-train-in-sweden-crashing-into-apartments/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/international/2013/01/15/cleaning-lady-accused-of-stealing-train-in-sweden-crashing-into-apartments/#comments Tue, 15 Jan 2013 11:34:58 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2013/01/15/cleaning-lady-accused-of-stealing-train-in-sweden-crashing-into-apartments/ A cleaning lady in Sweden stole a train and crashed it into an apartment building.

Investigators were initially stumped as to how a commuter train careened off its tracks and crashed into a kitchen of a flat in Saltsjöbaden, an affluent suburb south of Stockholm, in the early hours of Tuesday.

But it later transpired that the cleaner, a woman in her 20s, managed to start the four-car train, which had no passengers, and take it for a joy ride, according to train operator Arriva.

She drove it at high speed some 1.5 kilometers to the end station on the railway line, before it jumped off the rails and travelled another 25 meters before crashing into the three-storey building.

The woman suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was flown to a local hospital, police spokesman Lars Bystrom said. Three families live in the building, but none were injured following the 2.30am crash, police added.

A representative of Arriva said it’s unclear how the cleaner got the keys to the train, and added that she had not previously been employed as a driver.

“It is possible to start the train if you have training and access to a key, but exactly how this happened we have no answer to,” Arriva spokesman Tomas Hedenius told Metro.

An image of the suspect captured on surveillance footage and released by the NYPD.]]> The family of the man who was fatally shoved into the path of a subway train has enlisted legal counsel to investigate the actions taken by the photographer who captured the now-infamous image of Ki-Suk Han seconds before he was killed.

The photograph, taken by R. Umar Abbasi, showed Han gripping the platform, unable to pull himself from the tracks, as a Q train sped toward him at the 49th Street and Seventh Avenue subway station Monday. The image was featured on the cover of the New York Post Tuesday with a headline that read “DOOMED.”

Abbasi, a freelance photographer who was on his way from a separate assignment for the Post, said he snapped the photos in an effort to signal the train conductor to stop with his camera flash.

In interviews Wednesday, he said he was too far from Han on the platform to be able to help him in time. Abbasi also said many onlookers were recording video and taking photos on their cell phones as rescuers pulled Han’s bloodied body from beneath the train.

Han was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

“We are in the process of conducting an investigation as to the actions taken by the Post photographer and the company, as well as the action taken by transit authorities,” Charen Kim, an attorney representing the Han family, told Metro.

She added, “We are trying to perform a thorough investigation before deciding on legal action.”

Homeless man Naeem Davis, 30, was charged Wednesday with murder in the second degree after police said he pushed Han into the tracks following a verbal confrontation.

Police picked up Davis near 50th Street and Seventh Avenue, not far from the station where the shocking incident occurred. Davis reportedly confessed in police custody Tuesday to pushing Han and fleeing after he saw the train hit him.

“They are distraught, shocked, upset,” Kim said of Han’s widow and college-age daughter. “And they are constantly reminded by these photos and videos in graphic detail of their father and husband’s death.”

Han’s funeral was scheduled for Wednesday night in Flushing, Kim said.

(UPDATE) NJ rail bridge collapse causes derailment, chemical leak http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/national/2012/11/30/update-nj-rail-bridge-collapse-causes-derailment-chemical-leak/ http://www.metro.us/newyork/news/national/2012/11/30/update-nj-rail-bridge-collapse-causes-derailment-chemical-leak/#comments Fri, 30 Nov 2012 09:33:47 +0000 Metro Archive http://metro.1over0.com/newyork/uncategorized/2012/11/30/update-nj-rail-bridge-collapse-causes-derailment-chemical-leak/ A rail bridge collapsed on Friday over a creek in southern New Jersey, causing a Conrail freight train to derail and spill hazardous chemicals into the air and water, authorities said.

One of four tanks of the freight train carrying vinyl chloride fell into Mantua Creek, and its contents leaked into the waterway, which feeds into the Delaware River near Philadelphia, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Some 22 people were taken to a nearby hospital for precautionary examinations and were doing fine, said Larry Ragonese, a DEP spokesman who said the health danger and environmental impact was minimal.

“Initially there was a release of gas into the air that affected some nearby residents and people working right in that area,” he said.

Exposure to vinyl chloride, a highly toxic and flammable industrial chemical, can cause burning eyes or respiratory discomfort, he said.

Authorities evacuated a half-mile (805-metre) area around the spill, which took place at about 7 a.m. EST (1200 GMT) in Paulsboro, New Jersey, just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Local schools were closed and students were sent home, authorities said.

The leak was contained and no longer posed a threat, and authorities were using booms to trap the chemical in the water, Ragonese said.

At the scene, one of the freight cars was nearly vertical, nose-down and partly submerged in the creek. Other cars lay jumbled on the embankment.

“It’s part of living in Paulsboro, with refineries and trains. We accept it,” said resident John Diamond, 53, who was taking photographs at the scene.

The area is thick with chemical plants, and two refineries, PBF Energy’s Paulsboro and Nustar’s Asphault, are nearby.

Locals fish and go crabbing and jet-ski in the creek in the warm months, Diamond said.

Air quality monitors in the area did not register any problem, said Lawrence Hajna, also with the state DEP.

“All the levels are coming in within our safety range,” he said.

The swing bridge that collapsed underwent extensive repairs after getting damaged in a 2009 derailment of a coal freight train, said John Burzichelli, a state assemblyman and former mayor of Paulsboro.

New Jersey State Senate President Steve Sweeney, also on the scene, said a nearby homeowner reported hearing a “loud bang” from the bridge about two days ago, and Burzichelli said Conrail had come out to examine it in response.

“That bridge is very old. It’s not a good day for Conrail,” Burzichelli said.

Conrail officials could not be immediately reached for comment. Sweeney said he too was having trouble getting in contact with Conrail.

Conrail is jointly owned by rail operators CSX Corp and Norfolk Southern Corp.

The U.S. Coast Guard was responding to the accident along with the DEP.

A woman was arrested after authorities said she stabbed two people this morning following a dispute that started on the J train.

According to MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz, a confrontation between 25-year-old Dina Saint-Fleur and a 24-year-old woman started on the train and continued when they exited at the Sutphin Boulevard/Archer Avenue Station in Queens at 8:45 a.m.

On the escalator leading to the station’s exit, Saint-Fleur allegedly wielded a knife, stabbing the other woman in her left elbow. A 34-year-old man on the escalator become involved and was also reportedly stabbed by Saint-Fleur in his elbow.

A 42-year-old man who was riding the escalator near the chaotic scene fell down, injuring his back and elbow.

All three victims had only minor injuries, according to Ortiz.

Saint-Fleur was arrested by MTA police and remains in custody.

The video was shot in Kings Mountain, North Carolina on Friday morning. The semi got stuck on the tracks as the driver tried to drive over them, according to the description posted with the video.

“We saw the trucker go across the tracks and got stuck, started spinning out, smoking the wheels underneath,” said witness Kevin Harlow.

After he was unable to get the truck to budge, the driver jumped out of the cab and fled just as the train sped toward the crossing. It plowed through the tractor trailer, splitting it in half.

The woman recording the video can be heard screaming in terror at the terrifying scene.

Amtrak said about 31 passengers were on board the train. No injuries were reported, amazingly, and there were no hazardous chemicals on board the train.

The group performs long-form “missions” on camera involving, in their own words, “socially awkward or unusual situations.”

We’ve seen Improv Everywhere create confusing, but comical, scenes doing everything from mall Santa musicals to swimming pool poker. While the subway is often the backdrop for these “missions,” this sleeper car skit caught our eye because — let’s face it — everyone wishes they could lay down and nap on the train.

In “The Sleeper Car,” a friendly conductor invites tuckered out passengers to rest their eyes on makeshift cots during their nighttime commutes inside a subway in Queens. He asks other passengers to keep their voices down as not to disturb those who may be napping. He even offers pajamas and sleep masks. Confused observers look on, but are eventually enticed by the inviting cotton sheets and cozy blanket.

As much as we’d love to spread out and catch some Zs on the subway, we can’t help but think to ourselves, “Don’t lay down! There could be bedbugs on those cots!”

The more than four minutes of footage, posted on LiveLeak, begins with two men scuffling inside a moving train car. Bystanders repeatedly try to break up the fight. A woman, in particular, attempts to pull the two men away from each other, saying over and over, “Please, guys! Please, stop!”

The men continue to swing at each other and wrestle on the floor until the train comes to a stop and the fight moves onto the platform. The woman follows the men, again trying to break up the fight. One man gets back onto the train, but bursts out again before the doors close, running to attack the other man. Bystanders, including the woman, try to get between the men once more.

About two minutes and 51 seconds into the video, one man sprints back onto the train. The other man races towards the doors and throws a punch, hitting the woman, who is standing on the platform, in the face and knocking her down. It’s unclear whether she was the intentional target.

The other man immediately reaches down to pull her into the car, where she remains on the floor, holding her face. A moment later, blood spews from her nose onto the seats and floor as the man tries to apply pressure with his shirt.

Another passenger can be heard saying, “And nobody did nothing. That’s f-cked up.”
