This winter, ski close to home

Vale. Jackson Hole. Park City. … The Poconos?
Don’t count out skiing close to home, says Julie Wood, an American Express travel specialist (www.americanexpress.com/travel). She says East Coast ski destinations are known for having several options for skiers at every level, while also offering accessibility and convenience. She shared with Metro a few pretty convincing reasons to ski closer to home this winter.

You can go for a weekend:
“For those who have time constraints and can’t necessarily take a long trip this winter, skiing on the East Coast is the perfect way to take a short weekend break,” says Wood. “Most destinations are within driving distance.”

They’re also cheaper:
Since most East Coast destinations don’t require a trip to the airport, you don’t have to worry about the added expense of airfare. “This also allows you to take your own ski equipment rather than renting or checking it, which is another cost-reducer,” she says.

Good for the entire family:
“There are many more options for condominium resorts, which include cooking facilities and other amenities, like ski schools and entertainment venues,” says Wood. “It can also be much more affordable than the luxury market on the West Coast.”

Our mountains are good for training:
“Most importantly to the avid skier, the East Coast can be a little more challenging because conditions tend to be a bit icier. But if you can master skiing on mountains here, it certainly helps your ability to ski in other destinations around the world,” she says. Wood recommends Stratton Mountain in Vermont for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, while the slopes in Bethel, Maine are great for beginners. Stowe, Vermont is good for both intermediate and advanced snow bunnies.
