Flint gets most out of scrappy Drexel

Flint has guided Drexel to a 20-win season.

Bruiser Flint has done a marvelous job since landing at Drexel’s campus in 2001. But this may be his best coaching job yet.

Following last weekend’s 66-63 win over Towson, the Dragons (20-9, 11-7 CAA) earned the fifth-seed in this week’s CAA tournament. All this despite losing guard Jamie Harris and forward Kevin Phillip before the season. The duo was suspended indefinitely to face charges on a failed robbery.

Advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1996 is a long shot, but the NIT is within reach. Who knows? Maybe the Dragons will win the CAA tournament.

“Everybody got in the gym on their own time, and it has showed,” said junior forward Samme Givens, who starred at Academy of the New Church prior to Drexel. “We’ve been in the gym for 45 minutes to an hour extra just working on our game on our own time.”

In 2007, Drexel won 23 games and should have been part of the Big Dance. However, the Dragons were snubbed by the tournament committee. No matter what transpires the rest of the way, Drexel must be considered a pleasant surprise.

“We feel like our league is very strong and deserves as much recognition as a league like the A-10,” Flint said. “From top to bottom, we have a tough league. Yet the A-10 may get three bids and we’ll probably get one. That doesn’t make sense.”
