Big East Game 4 primer: Providence vs. Marquette
Game No. 4: Providence (15-16, 4-14 Big East) vs. Marquette (18-13, 9-9 Big East)
Line: Marquette -7
TV: 9:30 p.m., ESPNU
What to watch for: Marshon Brooks is the best pure scorer in the conference not because he’s the best player but because he’s the best at recognizing weaknesses and gaps in defenses. He’s part slasher, part shooter, give him space and he’ll own you. Marquette, which leads the league in scoring, has played soft defense in back-to-back losses, which is a huge reason why Seton Hall shot 57 percent from downtown in an upset over the weekend.
Tourney talk: We already have Marquette penciled in to its sixth straight NCAA tournament. A loss here might take the Golden Eagles back to the bubble, where they would have to wait out teams like Clemson, Michigan and Michigan State.
Sheen meter: “Sorry Middle America.” Marquette will definitely burst someone’s longshot bubble with a win here.
Prediction: Jimmy Butler bottled up Brooks, who went just 7 for 17 in Marquette’s 86-62 victory earlier this season. In fact, Brooks only scored nine total points in two meetings last season.
Marquette 79, Providence 71
Winner faces: No. 6 West Virginia tomorrow at 9 p.m.
