Doc Rivers coming back to Celtics
Turns out Doc Rivers isn’t ready to hang up his whistle after all.
The Celtics coach agreed to a five-year, $35 million contract extension today, ensuring he’ll be around through the end of the Big 3 era and beyond.
(Assuming Danny Ainge doesn’t trade him to Oklahoma City for a mediocre small forward, that is. Yes, we’re still bitter.)
It’s hard to argue with the deal. Rivers has been around longer than all but one other NBA coach, and he clearly knows how to handle a locker room full of stars. Likewise, by staying, Rivers gets to coach a locker room full of stars.
The $35 million deal will pay him nearly as much per season ($7 million) as he earned in his entire playing career ($7.8 million, per basketball-reference.com).
