Can anybody save golf?

Stewart Cink finished at 9-over at the British Open, in a tie for 30th.

There will never be another Tiger Woods.

With all apologies to recent Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy, that’s the way it is. Just ask 15-year PGA Tour veteran Stewart Cink.

“Guys like Tiger Woods come around, well, once,” Cink told Metro. “I saw [Jack] Nicklaus. I saw [Nick] Faldo. Nothing comes close to the way Tiger Woods played at his peak. To be honest, he’s probably the most electrifying player to ever play the game.”

Woods hasn’t played a competitive round since May, and many doubt he’ll ever regain his form. In Woods’ absence, the game has grown boring. There have been only four repeat winners in 2011, and none of those included a major.

So, what is wrong with golf these days?

“Tiger is definitely a huge piece of the puzzle,” Cink said. “It doesn’t matter if Rory McIlory or Phil Mickelson turn it up a notch. The game probably needs him because it’s exciting when Tiger Woods is playing great.”

American golf has also come to a screeching halt recently. The last three major winners have all been foreigners.
