Report: Jets re-sign Santonio Holmes

The Jets have signed the top wide receiver in the free agent class. Thankfully they didn’t have to go far to find him.

Santonio Holmes re-upped with the Jets on a 5-year, $50 million deal according to ESPN. The deal reportedly includes $24 million in guaranteed money. ESPN also reports that is believed to be the highest amount of guaranteed money ever given to a wide receiver.

Holmes came to the Jets from the Steelers last year. He had fallen out of favor in Pittsburgh after getting in trouble with the NFL and being suspended for the first four games of 2010. When he returned to action with the Jets he finished with 52 catches and 746 yards. He had six touchdowns.

We’ll have to wait and see how this affects free agent Braylon Edwards. Edwards may now be the one left out if the Jets don’t want to sign both free agent receivers.

The Jets are also reportedly talking to free agent cornerback — and arguably largest name on the market — Nnamdi Asomugha. Asomugha has played his whole career with the Raiders, but is not expected to return there.

The Jets have scheduled a press conference for this afternoon to announce the deal with Holmes.
