Are Internet Explorer users dumber than the rest of us?

Good news for people who enjoy making fun of old people: A study has
determined that Internet Explorer users may in fact be a little slower
than the rest of us.

“Well, duh,” you might say, “they’re still using Internet Explorer.” Joke on, wags! The study, which was run by totally-not-trying-to-score-some-points-here Internet consulting company Aptiquant, gave Internet users an IQ test; the ones who used IE got the lowest scores.

From CNN:

Users of Internet Explorer 6, released in 2001, scored the lowest on the tests, at just over 80. Users of Opera, the Norway-based browser, scored the highest at well over 120. (What AptiQuaint called its complete results included a bar graph showing the scores, but didn’t appear to have text giving the exact numbers.)

…If this all smacks of a little good, old-fashioned Microsoft hate, the language the company uses in its report doesn’t do much to downplay that.

“It is common knowledge that Internet Explorer Versions 6.0 to 8.0 are highly incompatible with modern web standards. In order to make websites work properly on these browsers, web developers have to spend a lot of unnecessary effort …,” said the report from AptiQuaint, which offers online tools for employers to measure employee, and potential employee, aptitude.

So this is basically bogus science! But it’s an interesting jumping-off point. By definition, people who use Internet Explorer are people who haven’t bothered look for a better web browser. This doesn’t make them dumber! It just makes them not as hip to the crazy new web things the rest of us are obsessed about.

However, we should note that this very site is incompatible with IE. How are they going to know we’re defending them?
