Red Sox make late trade for Bedard
The Red Sox finally made their 2011 trade deadline splash this afternoon, landing lefty Erik Bedard from the Mariners.
Boston gave up a package centered on Double-A catcher Tim Federowicz — a seemingly small price to pay in exchange for a former ace. Federowicz was dealt to the Dodgers as part of a three-team deal.
Bedard has stunning stuff, but he’s struggled with injuries throughout his career. He hasn’t started more than 20 games in a season since 2007.
Bedard, 32, gave up five runs in his return from the DL on Friday.
Boston had reportedly finished a deal for Rich Harden on Saturday, but the trade fell apart over the righty’s health.
