Plaxico Burress to miss first preseason game

For Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress his tune has gone from “Jailhouse Rock” to the blues. Or perhaps a take on the old country classic, aptly re-titled  “My Achy Breaky Ankle.”

After more than two years away from football, Burress will be out at least a few more days. An injured ankle will prevent Burress from travelling with the Jets for their preseason opener on Monday night in Houston.

The non-contact injury was suffered on Aug. 4 when Burress, the Jets marquee free agent signing of the offseason, was running routes with fellow wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Head coach Rex Ryan said that Burress will receive medical attention and rehab this weekend with the team’s plan to “chill him till Wednesday.”

Since signing with the Jets on July 31, Burress has been limited in practice. Head coach Rex Ryan said the team’s medical staff had concerns over the altitude of the flight to Houston impacting Burress’ recovery.

“We’re not going to play him,” Ryan said. “He will come out on Wednesday. He actually feels better today than he has at any other time.”

While he has gone through the team’s morning walk-thru session and done some light drills in afternoon practice, Burress has been held back from contact drills and anything which might strain his injury further. He is scheduled for an MRI today as a precaution.

Ryan said the MRI is to “make sure there’s not anything else wrong,” but he’s confident Burress will be ready to join his teammates soon.

“I want to get him out there at 100 percent, not 80 percent,” Ryan said. “If there was a game, he’d go out there and play.”
