Shakim Phillips: Former NJ football star transferring to UConn

Shakim Phillips #84 of the Boston College Golden Eagles at Doak Campbell Stadium on October 16, 2010

A Big East source has told Metro that former Boston College wide receiver Shakim Phillips will transfer to UConn. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Phillips informed the Huskies on Friday night that he plans to transfer to the current Big East champions.

A former U.S. Army All-American and a four-star recruit according to Rivals.com, Phillips played his freshman year for the Eagles, appearing in four games. The 6-foot-4, 205 lb. wide receiver was the consensus No. 1 player in the state of New Jersey and was a national recruit, registering offers from Arizona, Georgia and Tennessee. He earned attention in high school at Depaul High School in Wayne, N.J. and on the combine circuit with his good hands and excellent footwork.

UConn was among the schools that originally offered Phillips coming out of high school. The source said that Phillips never settled in at Chestnut Hill and was looking for a change in scenery. He notified the staff at Boston College in late July that he’d be seeking to leave the school.

Due to NCAA transfer regulations, Phillips will need to sit out his first year at UConn.
