Results: ABC News reports that the number of children admitted to emergency rooms for poisoning has increased by 28 percent between 2001 and 2008.
Significance: Half a million kids age 5 and under are poisoned annually after getting into household medications like cough syrup and prescription drugs.

Topic of Study: Apples and Pears Lower Stroke Risk
Study subjects: 20,000 people
Location of study: Holland
Results: “Fruits and vegetables whose edible sections are white may lower your risk of stroke more than other fruits and vegetables,” USA Today reports. “25 grams per day of white fruits and vegetables consumed led to a 9 percent decrease in the risk of stroke, and apples and pears were the most commonly consumed ‘white fruit.’”
Significance: Another sound reason to add apples and pears to your daily diet.

Topic of Study: Eyelid marks warn of heart attack
Study subjects: Cross section of adults
Location of study: Denmark
Results: BBC News reports that “Yellow markings [xanthelasmata] on the eyelids are a sign of increased risk of heart attack and other illnesses, say researchers in Denmark.”
Significance:  The report stated people with xanthelasmata, comprised mostly of excess cholesterol, “were 48% more likely to have a heart attack.”
