Does PETA ad about shark attacks go too far?

Had CJ Wickersham been a vegan, that shark probably would have spared him...

PETA is certainly no stranger to controversy. Especially recently, as the organization announced plans to launch a porn site all in the name of animal rights.

However, its latest ad campaign hits a little too close to home for the victim of a recent shark attack. CJ Wickersham was spear fishing in the Gulf of Mexico when he suffered a brutal attack on his leg by a bull shark. He remains in intensive care.

Soon after, PETA launched this ad depicting a human leg dangling from the mouth of a shark, with the message, “Payback Is Hell. Go Vegan.” PETA reportedly plans to put the ads on benches and billboards near Anna Maria Island, not far from where Wichersham was attacked.

“We are very glad that Mr. Wickersham is going to be OK, but we do hope that this painful and frightening experience makes him think about the pain and fear that he’s causing to fish — and other fisherman are causing to fish,” said campaign director Ashley Byrne in a Skype interview with Bay News 9.

Hear that, Wickersham? You should have known there’d be payback!

We’re sure that he is in his hospital bed filled with remorse just as much as that shark swims through life with the regret of causing pain to him.

Has PETA gone too far, even for those of us who haven’t been attacked by sharks?
