Burress, Sanchez connection finally comes together

Plaxico Burress celebrates one of his three touchdowns on Sunday.

He went from person of interest to persona non grata and now, after his Week 7 performance for the Jets, Plaxico Burress is the person of the hour.

Burress hauled in three touchdowns in Sunday afternoon’s 27-21 win over San Diego, lifting the Jets to a comeback win at MetLife Stadium. All three of his touchdowns came in the red zone, the combined distance totaling just 10 yards. All told, Burress had four catches for 25 yards, but it was those three tosses from quarterback Mark Sanchez into the end zone that made the difference. It is a rise in form for Burress, who had just one catch in the Monday night win over Miami.

“Every morning that you wake up on Sunday, you want to be great. Some of the situations that were happening, I would just say to myself ‘Just let the game come to me’ — just trying to be patient,” Burress said. “I was forcing it a little bit. The coaches have been calling the plays and I hadn’t been getting the results for them.”

Coming into Sunday, Burress had just 14 catches through six games and only two touchdowns. A towering presence at 6-foot-5, he was a risky addition to the Jets. He struggled with an ankle injury during preseason and has never seemed to acclimate to the offense. But Sunday afternoon he showed the big play ability that Burress possesses.

“Just working hard in practice and seeing the results in practice, I said ‘Hey, there is going to come a time in the game where these things are going to click,’” Burress said. “And today, we just had a great day.”
