Red Sox interview Gene Lamont, set Thanksgiving date

Cherington has set a target hire date for new skipper.

Well, Red Sox Nation might have something else to be thankful for while its passing the stuffing this Thanksgiving.

According to reports, that’s the target date the club plans to have a new manager in place by. They have narrowed the list to five candidates: Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum, Sandy Alomar, Jr., Torey Lovullo and Gene Lamont.

Lamont, the third-base coach for Detroit, reportedly spent eight hours with Red Sox GM Ben Cherington this past weekend at Fenway Park. Lamont has worked in the baseball business for almost 47 years.

“He’s a solid guy, a really good baseball guy with a good sense of humor,” Cherington recently told ESPNBoston. “I feel like I know him a lot better now than I did eight hours ago and I’m glad we brought him in.”

Red Sox ownership and management will sit down this week at the GM meetings in Milwaukee and dissect the pros and cons of the five candidates. There are no plans to interview anyone else.

“We’re not going to bring anyone in that we can’t envision ourselves hiring,” Cherington told ESPNBoston. “All five of those guys I can envision hiring to manage the Red Sox. We just have to pick one.”

Former Sox GM speaks on collapse

Chicago Cubs GM Theo Epstein was asked once again about the Sox’s epic September collapse during a panel discussion in Vermont.

The former Red Sox GM admitted that a few players were drinking beer in the clubhouse, but it was nothing compared to what went on in 2004.

“If you compare the 2011 team to the [World Series champion] 2004 team, they were a bunch of choir boys,” Epstein told ESPN over the weekend. “The difference is we won the last game in ’04.”
