Learn a new craft at the Boat Show

While at the Boat Show, stop by Fred’s Shed to brush up on watercraft maintenance and learn new repair tips.

Think you know everything there is about yachting? Think again. This year, the 107th Progressive Insurance New York Boat Show will put a special emphasis on boating education to draw newcomers to the sport. Starting today and running through Jan. 8 at the Javits Center, visitors can take advantage of free seminars, demos and workshops to improve their technique or learn brand new skills.

“A lot of people are afraid to get into something because they’re not educated about it,” said Jon Pritko, show manager for the Progressive Insurance New York Boat Show, describing this year’s array of classes. “So we cover the new-to-the-sport or beginner level all the way to advanced boaters.”

Boating neophytes can learn boating and budget-saving basics at the Boat Show’s Welcome to the Water Center and the Boating on a Budget Showcase.

At Fred’s Shed, “Fred the Outboard Doctor” will dispense valuable maintenance and repair tips, and he’ll answer audience questions. And for hard-core boat enthusiasts, The Annapolis School of Seamanship offers free seminars and demos, as well as an $85 intensive, three-hour workshop.

Still not sure a boat show is for you? “I’d say give us a shot,” Pritko said.
