Marvelous Meals on Wheels

Buffalo mozzarella is the star of Pitruco's Margherita pizza.

Running the rat race often leaves us with little time for lunch these days. But if you’re like me, you refuse to lower your culinary standards due to time constraints. If you told me years ago that I’d be a frequent consumer of food served from a roadside truck, I’d have said you were smoking something. But that was then and this is now and every Philadelphia foodie knows that gourmet food trucks are where it’s at.
One of the newest additions to the scene is Pitruco Pizza, a brick oven wood-fired pizza place on wheels making 11-inch personal-sized pizzas from scratch to order. On Mondays and Wednesdays, they set up shop in LOVE park, just a few blocks away from the Metro Philly offices. So one day a few weeks ago, I dragged a friend with me to give their pies a try.

The purveyors are very friendly and helpful. Feel free to play with the menu and they’re happy to accommodate your tastes. I went with the traditional Margherita for my first attempt and was quite pleased. The chewy, doughy crust topped with a tangy tomato sauce and oozing with mozzarella was just what I was after. My companion noted that I was quickly becoming covered in charcoal as I ate, but hey, I’m covered in newsprint most days, so at least it matched. And I didn’t care. The pie was pretty close to perfection for me and good food is worth getting messy for.

Now, you may have to wait a few moments for your order since each pizza is made to your specifications, but that’s ok. Purveyors Jonah, Nathan and Eric are about as yummy as their offerings so why not stand around and enjoy some eye candy while you wait? However, if you’re in a hurry, you can check out their menu online and call ahead.
