Fun with hoops numbers

Hidden numbers are the key to understanding winning fantasy basketball. It’s the field-goal percentage, the blocks, the steals and free throws that are so important. Everyone sees the points, rebounds and assists, but they are just three categories. There’s so much value in other numbers.

Here are some thing you might not realize as we approach the one month mark of this condensed season:

3 – Number of players averaging at least 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals. They are Marc Gasol, Dwight Howard and Andrew Bogut.

3 – Number of players averaging at least 1.0 blocks, 1.0 steals and 1.0 3-pointers: They are Kevin Durant, Antawn Jamison and Danny Granger.

8 – Number of players shooting at least 50 percent from the field and 75 percent from the line. They are Luke Ridnour, Mo Williams, Chris Paul, Pau Gasol, Kris Humphries, Mario Chalmers, Greg Monroe and Steve Nash.

100 – Blake Griffin’s rank in ESPN’s player rater. That’s because he’s shooting 51.2 percent from the line and taking 7.2 free throws a night. Owners just can’t handle that. He also blocks an atrocious 0.6 shots per game and doesn’t make 3-pointers. Terrible fantasy player, great real-life player.

12 – Greg Monroe’s rank in ESPN’s player rater. That’s because he shoots 81.1 percent from the line and 54.6 percent from the field. Percentages are so huge for high-volume shooters.

57.7 – LeBron James’ shooting percentage this season.

48.1 – LeBron James’ career shooting percentage. He’ll come back to earth and settle in around 51 percent when it’s said and done this season.
