Mets’ Gee hits DL with blood clot

Dillon Gee.

Mets starter Dillon Gee checked into a hospital Tuesday morning with numbness in his right hand and after undergoing tests it was determined he has a clot in his right, throwing shoulder.

Gee, 26, was in New York during the All-Star break when he checked into New York Presbyterian Hospital. Doctors used a catheter to break up the blood clot. He remains in the hospital under observation.

The Mets wasted no time in immediately placing Gee on the 15-day disabled list, but it is unknown as of now when the pitcher will be able to return to the mound.

Gee had settled nicely into the No. 4 spot in the rotation this season posting a 6-7 record with a 4.10 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings pitched. He’s made 17 starts and was on pace to well exceed his career highs of 27 starts and 160 2/3 innings both set last season.

The Mets haven’t made a corresponding move yet, but the injury could open the door for prospect Matt Harvey. Harvey is the No. 2 prospect in the organization behind only fellow pitcher Zack Wheeler, according to Baseball America. They also rank Harvey as the No. 54 prospect in all of baseball. Harvey, 23, is 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 18 starts for Triple-A Buffalo.

If it’s not Harvey, the spot could go to current bullpen arm Miguel Batista or Garrett Olson, a former major leaguer with Baltimore, who has a 5.08 ERA in 18 starts for Buffalo this season.
