Playing the Field: Magic Johnson and Rihanna … on a boat!

Rihanna, not on a boat, but for your viewing pleasure nonetheless.

If I told you Rihanna was hanging out on a yacht with an NBA player, you probably wouldn’t be surprised. After all, she did date Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp for awhile and has spent her fair share of time sitting courtside at games. But who was the lucky guy?

Dwyane Wade, right? He’s not at the Olympics and he’s now divorced, so it makes sense. Or maybe Dwight Howard, getting ready for the Hollywood life?

The answer would be none of the above. In fact, Rihanna was hanging out with Hall of Famer Magic Johnson this weekend. ON A BOAT! The 24-year-old singer was in Saint-Tropez, France having fun on a yacht — as millionaire 20-somethings are wont to do — when Magic decided to stop by and hang out with her and her girlfriends. Seriously. These things apparently happen.

And of course Rihanna provided the visual proof of her “neighbor” stopping by:

Speaking of Kemp though, did Magic clear this with him? Remember, Magic is now a minority owner and the public face of the new Dodgers’ ownership group. I see some serious potential for jealousy coming up. I suppose when your yacht is parked next to Rihanna, what choice do you have?

Miami football acts like Miami football

Yahoo! Sports, the same outlet that dropped the bomb on the University of Miami football program’s dealings with millionaire Ponzi schemer Nevin Shapiro, dug up some dirt on the current program this weekend. Newly hired football coach Al Golden, formerly of Temple, apparently strolled onto campus last offseason and immediately started recruiting players using Shapiro’s associate, Sean “Pee Wee” Allen. (Here’s a tip pal, don’t go by the nickname Pee Wee. That goes for every person on Earth.)

Allen testified in the Shapiro case and Golden reportedly knew all about his connections. And used him to recruit players anyway. Oops.

Golden denies the whole thing of course. But besides saying he’s “proud of — and I stand by — my record” and saying he has always been cooperative in the on-going Shapiro investigation he pleads the “can’t comment on an on-going case” defense.

It probably doesn’t matter much in the end. Once the NCAA rules on the Shapiro case, the program will be penalized so heavily a little added illicitness won’t matter.

Coming from The U, it might actually be celebrated.

Knocked the heck out

Watching UFC fights you sometimes get the feeling the two combatants are so afraid to make a mistake in the opening few minutes of a match they’d rather just stare at each other.

Not Ryan Jimmo.

Jimmo — apparently his real name — decided to take the fight right to Anthony Perosh in Jimmo’s UFC debut. He proceeded to knock him out with one punch in a record-tying seven seconds.

Video: Highlights: UFC 149 – KO of the Night

Granted Perosh isn’t a superstar or anything — he’s lost four of his seven UFC fights — but that’s still an impressive knockout by the Canadian.
