Playing the Field: The best sports commercials of all-time and Marc Gasol spouts off

No word on if used mustache hair was part of the procedure.

So Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker is set to make commercials for hair transplant surgery after getting the procedure done by the great Dr. Robert Leonard, who somehow found time to do the deed between his endless tanning sessions and his role as “Dr. Robert” on The Bold and the Beautiful.

Yes, the lightning quick receiver who led the NFL in both receptions and critical Super Bowl drops last season is getting plugs.

Now, this isn’t the first time Welker has endorsed a questionable product. He appeared alongside Clay Matthews and DeMarcus Ware in an adult diaper ad earlier this offseason.

Welker is clearly using the time-tested “if I start doing semi-ridiculous things all the time, no one will think twice once I do something really crazy” tactic.

Remember, No. 83 was once benched early in a playoff game for dropping multiple foot references around the time the whole Rex Ryan foot fetish ordeal broke out. So perhaps making commercials for strange products is just a long and twisted way to enhance his First Amendment rights around Bill Belichick.

Either way, Welker isn’t the first sports star to get whacky in a 30 second spot. A look at some of our favorite sports commercials over the years. And no this isn’t just an excuse to play a stream of beer ads from 30 years ago. It really isn’t.

Yogi Berra for Miller Lite
Why it works: Look for a confused Jason Alexander over Yogi’s shoulder. His reaction is awesomely “George” throughout the whole ordeal.

Some guy for Bud Light
Why it works: Because beer and sports are forever linked … mainly because of brilliant commercials like these that you can’t air anymore.

Bob Uecker for Miller Lite

Why it works: Because all Rodney Dangerfield and Bob Uecker bits are hilarious.

The Top 10 funniest sports commercials as told by an old  LeBron honk from Cleveland

Why it works: All of these are pretty good too. Shockingly enough, LeBron James appears humble in not one but TWO of these commercials, a far cry from what his image is today for a lot of people. Oh, and there is no chance that commercial No. 2 aired in the United States. I refuse to believe the FCC was ever that liberal.

Dumb comment of the day

Marc Gasol is about to find out what Tyson Chandler’s elbow tastes like. Why? Here’s what the Spaniard had to say to HoopsHype about the on-going “Dream Team” debate:

“On a bad day for the ’92 team, the current team would lose by just 15 or 20 points against them.”

Team USA plays Spain today (4:30 p.m., ESPN2).
