Publisher Square Enix has finally reunited with Nintendo

“Heroes of Ruin” is a great fit for a portable console.

Square Enix and Nintendo have always had one of those on-again, off-again romances. Back in the NES and SNES days, these two Japanese megacorporations walked arm-in-arm like teenaged lovers. Sony came came between them, however, and the PS1 and PS2 eras saw Nintendo bereft with nary a “Final Fantasy” to call its own. Well, uncork the bubbly. Your favorite celebrity couple is back. Square Enix is supporting Nintendo’s 3DS in a big way.
Here are two just-released titles.

‘Heroes of Ruin’
Console: Nintendo 3DS
Publisher: Square Enix
Grade: 4/5

Do you long for the loot-filled goodness of a Diablo title but your laptop starts hiccuping just by loading Google? Give “Heroes of Ruin” a try. It’s a streamlined affair but all of your favorite addictive game mechanics are firmly in place. Four-player online dungeon exploring and fast-paced combat? Check.
Tons of cl
asses and over 600,000 items to find or craft? You betcha.

The graphics are serviceable but not impressive. The game also rewards button-mashing over smart tactics. Still, it’s an online-enabled Diablo clone on a portable console. That right there is pretty cool.

‘Theatrhythm Final Fantasy’
Console: Nintendo 3DS
Publisher: Square Enix
Grade: 4/5

Finally, everyone’s favorite JRPG has come to the 3DS. Unfortunately, it’s a music game. Wait, don’t stop reading. It’s a good music game. Think of it as the best parts of something like PaRappa the Rapper with a fancy coat of “Final Fantasy” paint.

The game has you keeping rhythm to all of your favorite tunes from the franchise’s history.  It shouldn’t work, but it does. It’s cute, ridiculously addictive and full of inside jokes for the megafan.
The only downside? The game lacks an epic storyline that would have fit the source material like a mythril glove.
