Still kickin’: Red Sox beat Yanks on day it could have all unraveled

The bat of Adrian Gonzalez powered the Red Sox to victory Saturday night in New York.

It looks as though the Red Sox aren’t ready to mail in 2012 just yet.

The day started with ESPN announcer and former Sox manager Terry Francona visiting with his old pupils in the visitors clubhouse at Yankee Stadium. Francona was there on assignment in preparation for Sunday night’s game in the Bronx but it struck more than one media member as a curious sight.

But Francona’s visit will now likely be a non-issue, as a simple win proved to be a cure-all for the Red Sox who beat the Yankees, 8-6, Saturday night.

Curtis Granderson misplayed a ball in center hit by Boston’s Pedro Ciriaco, causing the ball to fall and allowing Jacoby Ellsbury to score from first in the ninth inning. The run broke a 6-6 tie and Dustin Pedroia knocked in Ciraco a batter later to make it 8-6, Boston.

Adrian Gonzalez continued his hot streak for the Red Sox as he had three hits and four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the fifth.

Jon Lester was solid in his start, allowing four earned runs over six innings. He struck out six and allowed just four hits.
Alfredo Aceves picked up the save.
