Giants’ Thomas reinjures knee in camp

Terrell Thomas.

For a team all too familiar with training camp injuries, the Giants got some bad news yesterday.

Starting cornerback Terrell Thomas, who tore his right ACL?last preseason, has reaggravated the same knee.

The injury happened in practice on Sunday, but Thomas spoke to head coach Tom Coughlin after the practice and thought he’d be fine. It turns out that wasn’t the case.

“He walked up to me after practice [yesterday]; he thought he felt good,” Coughlin said. “He didn’t really seem to have any issues, and then this morning, when he came back [to training camp] and he was swollen … they sent him to [the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan].”

It was there that he had an MRI and doctors determined he would need arthroscopic surgery to further diagnose how badly the repaired ligament was damaged.

Thomas, who played in all 32 games in 2009 and 2010, was one of a handful of defensive backs injured before the season in 2011, including first-round pick Prince Amukamara and Brian Witherspoon. The Giants lost Aaron Ross to the Jaguars in free agency and were counting on Thomas’ help.
