President Obama weighs in on Tebow, Sanchez

Put this one on President Barack Obama’s veto list.

While making an appearance on 97.1 The Fan in Columbus, Ohio, Obama weighed in on the supposed quarterback controversy between Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow. The Jets, who acquired Tebow in a mid-March trade, have publicly said that Sanchez is the starter and that their new acquisition was a wrinkle to their offense.

That didn’t stop the president from using the word “controversy” to describe the team’s addition of Tebow to the quarterback mix.

“I got to tell you, I don’t like the idea of a quarterback controversy at the start of a season so if I was a Jets fan, I’d be pretty nervous. Sanchez is not Tom Brady yet, but he led them to [the] playoffs two years in a row,” Obama said. “I think Tim Tebow seems to be a wonderful young man, and he’s got just a great winning attitude. He really steps up when things count. There’s going to be a lot of tension in that situation so it’ll be interesting to see how it plays itself out.”

Tebow is being utilized by the Jets in their Wildcat package, short yardage situations and on special teams. An unconventional quarterback not known for his accuracy, he’s been much maligned as a passer. It should be noted that Tebow’s career completion percentage of 47.3 percent is currently higher than Obama’s approval rating. According to the most recent Gallup Poll, 47 percent of the nation approves of the job of the president is doing.

In addition to weighing in on the Jets quarterback situation, the president also came out on the program in favor of the recent sanctions for the Penn State football program.
