Few surprises as Jets make final roster cuts

Robert Griffin.

There were only a few surprises on Friday as the Jets trimmed down their roster to 53 players, with notable cuts to three 2012 draft picks and quarterback Matt Simms, the son of Giants legendary quarterback Phil Simms.

All told, the Jets released 23 players following last night’s fourth and final preseason game in Philadelphia. Three players taken in the draft — running back Terrance Ganaway, offensive lineman Robert Griffin and wide receiver Jordan White — were among the surprise cuts from the team. The Jets made 15 cuts on Friday before their afternoon practice and then an additional eight subtractions this evening.

The list of all the cuts the Jets made on Friday:

WR Joseph Collins
OT Paul Cornick
LB Marcus Dowtin
DB Donnie Fletcher
RB Terrance Ganaway
OT Robert Griffin
OG Fredrick Koloto
OC Matt Kroul
P Spencer Lanning
DB LeQuan Lewis
TE Tarren Lloyd
DS D’Anton Lynn
WR Royce Pollard
DB Julian Posey
DE Jay Richardson
WR Eron Riley
LB Brett Roy
LB Ricky Sapp
QB Matt Simms
TE Hayden Smith
NT Martin Tevaseu
WR Jordan White
Besides jettisoning the three draft picks, the most notable cuts included Marcus Dowtin, an undrafted rookie free agent linebacker who impressed in camp and seems like a candidate to make the practice squad. Veteran linebacker Jay Richardson, who last played in the NFL in 2010 and produced three tackles last night in the loss to Eagles, was looked at as a bubble player to make the team. Nose tackle Martin Tevaseu, nicknamed “MTV” by the coaching staff, was with the Jets for five games last year but lost the positional battle with rookie undrafted free agent Damon Harrison for the final nose tackle spot.

D’Anton Lynn, an undrafted rookie free agent safety whose father is Jets running back coach Anthony Lynn, was cut on Friday morning.
