Red Sox wrap up Fenway slate Wednesday night

Fenway Park

Playing at Fenway Park used to be the ultimate home field advantage in all of Major League Baseball. Knowing the Green Monster and having the hometown fans behind their ballclub night-in and night-out made it extremely difficult on opponents who came in to play the Red Sox.

Not so much this year, as going into Tuesday night’s second to last home game of the season, the Red Sox were a dreadful 34-45 at Fenway Park. There also isn’t the same atmosphere at the park than in the past.

The number of empty seats has increased as the season has gone on, but yet the Red Sox still say they sellout every game as their streak nears 800 games in a row. There isn’t the electricity in the park that there has been in years past and singing “Sweet Caroline” before the bottom of the eighth has become a mockery.

You have to go all the way back to 1997 to find the last time the Red Sox had a losing record at home. It was also the last time the Red Sox finished with a sub-.500 record overall. That year the Red Sox went both 39-42 at home and on the road to finish at 78-84. The 2012 team has already assured itself it will be worse than the 1997 team both at home and overall.

Being seriously out of playoff contention since about early August has dramatically affected fan support of the team to the point where the Red Sox need to honor the 2004 World Series team prior to last night’s game and announce an All-Fenway Park team before tonight’s final home game of the year. This seems to be just another PR stunt to try and get fans to come out for two meaningless home games. Thankfully, next year is a new year and hopefully the nightmare will be over.
