X-rays negative on Holmes, status still unclear

Things went from bad to only slightly worse on Monday for the Jets as a MRI revealed that star wide receiver Santonio Holmes suffered an injury to his foot and will be out for at least the upcoming Monday night game against the Texans.

The announcement came a week after head coach Rex Ryan announced that Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis suffered an ACL tear in Week 3, an injury that in all likelihood will shelve the Jets best defensive player for the rest of the regular season.

Ryan said that as far as the injury to Holmes, the team is still “trying to figure out what it is.” Details still seem to be murky. The negative result on the X-ray confirms there were no broken
bones, but the MRI will determine any damage to ligaments or muscles.

“As far as Santonio coming back, we have good news on the X-ray. The X-rays were negative; the MRI we’re having shipped to different places and all that type of stuff,” Ryan said. “Not sure how many weeks he’s going to be out [or] the real extent of that injury. We just know the X-rays were negative. That was good news.”

The loss of Holmes stings nearly as much as the injury to Revis as he was easily the Jets’ most dynamic wide receiver.

Perhaps their only true playmaker, Holmes leads the team with 20 receptions and 272 receiving yards. He represents 33 percent of the Jets’ total offense through four games. Last Sunday in the comeback overtime win at Miami, Holmes had nine catches for 147 yards as the only bright spot on a lethargic Jets offense.

There is optimism that Holmes could make a return to the field sooner rather than later.

“If it’s muscle it could heal much quicker. If it’s something else, ligaments or whatever, it could take much longer. But it’s good news for the fact that the X-rays were negative. That’s good news,” Ryan said.

“Obviously it looks doubtful for this week. Further than that I’m not sure.”
