Week 5 Fallout

We’ve talked a lot about how talent eventually rises in the NFL. So when owners were in an all-out panic over Ryan Mathews’ role, we were trying to buy up. Last night, you saw why.

The difference in talent between Mathews and Jackie Battle is so large you could drive an 18-wheeler through it. After busting out against the Chargers, Mathews is locked and loaded as a weekly must-start the rest of the way.

Other Week 5 notes:

* Tony Gonzalez caught 13 balls and now leads the league in catches with 39. He’s not nearly as explosive as he used to be, but he’s in one-on-one coverage on every play as defenses double Julio Jones and Roddy White.

* Robert Griffin’s concussion is a little scary considering he didn’t even know what the score was when docs initially examined him. Kirk Cousins would start in Week 6 if RG3 doesn’t pass testing.

* I’d be selling high on Ahmad Bradshaw. The Browns’ run defense is bad and decimated by injury. Bradshaw rarely bounces back well from big workloads. And David Wilson is really coming on again.

* Cedric Benson’s foot injury could be serious. If Alex Green ends up with an extended role as the starter, he’d be a must-start in fantasy.

* Reggie Wayne is seeing 15.0 targets per game from a really talented QB in a passing offense. It’s impossible for him to fail.

* Rashard Mendenhall’s return was wildly impressive. He’s now locked in as the feature back and a solid RB2 weekly. He emerged from his 2012 debut setback free.

* I wouldn’t worry about the stinker from the Ravens’ passing attack. It was a tough spot in a hostile environment against two tough press corners in Stanford Routt and Brandon Flowers.

* Chris Johnson went back in the tank, so hopefully you sold high after last week. Simply put, he’s just not good enough and deserves to be benched. He’s probably lucky Javon Ringer (knee) is done for the year or CJ?K really could have gotten his role slashed.
