Jets officially place Revis on season-ending IR

Darrelle Revis officially won’t be a part of the Jets’ Super Bowl roster if they get there. The team officially placed him on the season-ending injured reserve list on Friday afternoon.

Revis suffered an ACL tear during the Week 3 overtime win in Miami. Earlier this month, head coach Rex Ryan was hesitant to put Revis on IR, saying there was an “0.002 percent chance that he can play in the Super Bowl.” Perhaps it was part motivation, part gimmick but the gig was up on Friday.

“I know I had said before about Darrelle, that I would like to wait for
him to have surgery whether we place him on IR or not. Unfortunately,
really with our time situation, we had Eric Smith being out this week [and]
we’re going to need that roster spot. When you looked at it, you can
designate guys and all that, when I said if it was a 0.002 percent
chance, well it’s not that high,” Ryan said. “In the best interest of
really the organization and Darrelle, we will place Darrelle on IR. It
won’t be a designated for return, so that would be it. I was kind of
holding out hope, but the more information we got, the more you realize
that that wouldn’t be good for Darrelle either. We will place him on
injured reserve.”

With the open roster slot, the Jets signed safety Antonio Allen to the roster. Allen, the Jets’ seventh-round pick in this past spring’s NFL Draft, was impressive in rookie camp and was considered an underrated safety coming out of South Carolina. With safety Eric Smith suffering a knee injury during practice on Wednesday, bringing Allen on board with the open roster slot made sense.

Allen was considered a ball hawk during his career with the Gamecocks, where he started 31 games.

The Jets also announced wide receiver Santonio Holmes had surgery earlier this week for his Week 4 foot injury that landed him on IR. In addition, linebacker Josh Mauga had surgery on Friday to repair a torn pectoral muscle suffered on Monday night. Mauga will miss the remainder of the season.

“We’re anticipating, and assuming really, that these guys will be full-go when we come back in the offseason,” Ryan said of Holmes and Mauga.
