Out with Mohawk? Vance pondering new hair style

Is this the last time we’ll see Vanimal with his trademark —and fan-approved — Mohawk?

Now that the season is over Vance Worley is thankful for one thing. He has his hair again. Back in spring training, Worley tried to grow his thick black locks out, but fans demanded a Mohawk.

“It felt like I couldn’t do anything about it,” Worley said. “They just said they wanted the Mohawk.”
Well, he could have done something else with his hair but Worley is too nice. He let the fans dictate what style he would sport on top of his head.

Do you think his locker-mate Jonathan Papelbon would ever do such a thing, as in accommodating fans with a certain look? No chance.

Pap and many other players do what they want to do. Some even eat chicken and beer in the locker room. Paging Jon Lester and Josh Beckett.

But perhaps Worley, who quit shaving the sides of his head toward the end of the season due to his year-ending elbow injury, will join those ranks next season.

“This might be it for the Mohawks,” Worley said. “I like having hair. I would rather not have to go and have my head shaved every week. I would love to just let it grow for weeks on end.”

Maybe Worley will develop a Samson complex and not be able to cut his hair.

“Who knows? Maybe that’ll be the case,” he said. “I just know I like it like this. I won a few games with the Mohawk and the fans associated the winning with the Mohawk.”

Uh oh, if Worley ditches the Mohawk, will that be the end of the caricature that accompanies Worley’s World. We’ll just have to see.

Happy birthday

We want to wish Vance a belated birthday. He turned 25 on Sept. 25. The pitcher finished an injury-shortened 2012 season by going 6-9 with a 4.20 ERA.
