Bart Scott’s streak in jeopardy against Dolphins

Bart Scott might just have to wait.

The iron man of the Jets might be taking a weekend off for the first time since 2004 — a streak of 116 consecutive games — thanks to a toe injury. Scott told the media Thursday he has been playing wearing a right cleat “a size and a half” larger than usual to accommodate the wrapping of his toe.

Scott suffered the injury in the Jets’ Week 3 win over the Dolphins and has played in the four subsequent games. He said the hyperextended toe causes difficulty when stopping and changing direction.

“When I took the shoe off, I knew what it was. Thought it [would] be a three- to four-week injury, maybe five-week injury,” Scott said. “I thought that we were going against some really tough running teams, [so] I wouldn’t be able to help. Wish we could have got some of those games, I think it would have helped the toe feel better.”

Scott played sparingly in Sunday’s loss to the Patriots due to the injury. Scott didn’t practice on Wednesday or Thursday and the injury is obviously taking its toll.

“Whatever’s best for the team, I don’t care about the streak,” Scott said. “I care about helping my teammates and trying to win a championship. That’s always been my primary goal and why I came here. If helping the team is best for me to be on the sideline and help these young linebackers, see what’s going on and help slow the game down for them, then I’ll do that. If it’s biting down and jacking my toe some more so we can get to the bye 3-1 in our division, that’s what I’ll do. Pain is really not an issue for me, I can deal with it.”
