NBA Power Rankings: Through one month the Grizzlies and Spurs reign

Marc Gasol and the Grizzlies are at the head of the NBA class.

Records as of 11/26:

1. Memphis Grizzlies (9-2 last week No. 1) – A loss to a hot Denver team isn’t enough to knock this crew from the top spot. Just ask the Lakers.

2. San Antonio Spurs (11-3, last week No. 4) – Tim Duncan is your Western Conference Player of the Week. We’re gonna party like it’s 2003!

3. Oklahoma City Thunder (10-4, last week No. 6) – Kevin Durant (26.5 points) and Russell Westbrook (21.8 points) rank in the Top 10 in scoring. They’re good at basketball.

4. Miami Heat (10-3, last week No. 5) – LeBron James found Ray Allen for the game-winning shot against the Cavs on Saturday. Cavs fans and Celtics fans share shoulders to cry on.

5. New York Knicks (9-3, last week No. 2) – Giving up 133 points to the Rockets? The Knicks are coming back down to earth after starting the year 6-0.

6. Los Angeles Clippers (8-5, last week No. 3) – After three straight losses on the road, the Clippers look to regroup in L.A. against the Hornets, T-Wolves, and Kings. Yawn.

7. Brooklyn Nets (8-4, last week No. 7) – It looks like the Nets have found a “Blueprint” for success. That’s a Jay-Z reference obviously.

8. Boston Celtics (8-6, last week No. 10) – There’s nobody in the NBA better at passing up wide open layups for assists than Rajon Rondo. But hey, haters gonna hate.

9. Nuggets (8-6, last week No. 15) – Going 4-0 over the last week is the Denver Nuggets we thought existed to start the year.

10. Philadelphia 76ers (8-6, Last week No. 9) − So Andrew Bynum hurt himself while bowling. That’s like an average-size person getting hurt playing skeeball.

11. Atlanta Hawks (8-4, last week No. 17) – The Hawks are on a five-game winning streak, but does anybody care? Tickets for Monday’s home game vs. Bobcats were going for $0.45. That’s cents.

12. Los Angeles Lakers (7-7, last week No. 12) – Two good wins over the Nets and Mavs… but how on earth can you explain a 16-point loss to the Sacramento Kings? You can’t.

13. Dallas Mavericks (7-7, last week No. 11) – No rhyme or reason to the Mavs season thus far. Unless you can rhyme something with “They really miss Dirk Nowitzki”.

14. Golden State Warriors (8-6, last week No. 19) – Stephen Curry leads the Warriors in scoring with 18.4 points per game. What’s crazier: 14 games and no sprained ankles.

15. Milwaukee Bucks (6-5, last week No. 8) – A three-game losing streak means only one thing: It’s Buck-hunting season. Boom!

16. Chicago Bulls (6-6, last week No. 14) – Are the Bulls really worse than half the NBA’s teams? According to us they are right now, and that’s all that matters.

17. Charlotte Bobcats (7-5, last week No. 24) – It’s taken the Bobcats all of 12 games to match their win total of last season. Michael Jordan just lost a bet.

18. Houston Rockets (6-7, last week No. 18) – James Harden makes his return to OKC on Wednesday. He’ll probably score 50 points in the loss.

19. Utah Jazz (7-7, last week No. 22) – Al Jefferson is averaging 15.6 points and 11.3 rebounds. It’ll be interesting to see the contract he signs after this season.

20. Portland Trailblazers (6-7, last week No. 13) – Admittedly, the Blazers are all over the map here on our power rankings. There a couple bench players short of consistency.

21. Indiana Pacers 6-8, last week No. 20) First the good news: The Pacers are ranked No. 1 in the NBA in rebounds. Now the bad news: They’re ranked No. 29 in scoring.

22. Orlando Magic (5-8, last week No. 21) – Glen Davis has taken on a leadership role with the Magic. It’s gotta be tough balancing that with Season 8 of Spongebob Squarepants.

23. Phoenix Suns (6-8, last week No. 25) – The Suns are playing the worst defense since Mike D’Antoni was head coach. In other words, they rank dead last in points allowed (103.3).

24. Minnesota Timberwolves (5-7, last week No. 16) – Kevin Love is averaging 24.3 points and 14 rebounds over his first three games back with the T-Wolves — all losses. More importantly, he’s averaging zero knuckle pushups.

25. Sacramento Kings (4-9, last week No. 28) – A tip of the cap for taking down the Lakers last week on the road in Sacramento. Get it?

26. Detroit Pistons (3-11, last week No. 26) – Sorry Detroit, a one-point win over the Raptors won’t do much for you. Neither will a 21-point loss to the Knicks.

27. Toronto Raptors (3-7, last week No. 27) – Think you had a tough week? Toronto lost two games by one point in regulation, and another to the Spurs in OT.

28. Cleveland Cavaliers (3-10, last week 29) – These rankings came out prior to the Cavs game against the Memphis on Monday. Yeah, not too worried about it.

29. New Orleans Hornets (3-9, last week No. 23) – The Hornets are now losers of seven games in a row. No news on Eric Gordon, either. At this point we may never hear from him again.

30. Washington Wizards (0-11, last week No. 30) – If you took the best D-League team (your guess is as good as mine) and matched them up with the Wizards tonight, Washington could be 0-12.
