Playing the Field: Obama isn’t Tebow’s ‘lord and savior’

Wait a second, Jamie Foxx is in collusion with Mark Sanchez! Does Tebow know this!?

You may have missed the latest pseudo-controversy stirred up by the Catholic League this week when comedian Jamie Foxx made a joke at the Soul Train Awards last Sunday.

Foxx made a joke referring to President Barack Obama as his “Lord and Savior.”

“It’s like church over here. It’s like church in here. First of all, give an honor to God and our Lord and Savior Barack Obama. Barack Obama,” Foxx told the audience.

It was, obviously, a joke. (I’m going to assume Foxx doesn’t think Obama is the omniscient deity who created Heaven and Earth.) But Catholic League President Bill Donohue took offense, releasing a statement condemning Foxx’s comments.

“It just goes to show that even though Obama did not succeed in stopping the oceans from rising (as he promised to do in 2008), he did succeed in convincing Jamie Foxx, and no doubt legions of others, that God exists,” Donohue said in the statement. “Whether God can survive an ACLU lawsuit accusing him of violating church and state grounds remains to be seen.”

And since no religious controversy is complete without Tebow weighing in, he was asked on Friday about Foxx’s comments.

Tebow said he wasn’t aware of Foxx’s statements but that didn’t stop him from taking a stance.

“He’s our president and we all respect him and we all pray and wish him that he does his best these next four years,” Tebow said. “I’m sure he’s going to do a great job, but he’s not my Lord and Savior.”

It’s good to get clarification on that.

If you haven’t seen the clip — and if you don’t regularly watch Fox News you may not have — here it is:

Tebow is apparently a fan of Foxx though.

“I have a lot of respect for our president. Never met Jamie Foxx, would love to, he’s very funny. Love a lot of his movies and everything he’s done,” Tebow said. “He’s a funny guy and I’ll leave it at that.”

Good call, Tim. If only everyone else did the same.
