Playing the Field: Bats invade Marquette basketball game

Manu Ginobili is not impressed.

During yesterday’s Providence-Marquette game at the Bradley Center the teams got an unexpected visitor in the form of a bat (or bats?) flying around the court.

And of course it led to tons of unintentional humor.

Let’s just say you may be 6-foot-8 and 230 pounds, but that doesn’t mean
a mammal the size of a mouse with wings won’t freak you out.

After the players spent awhile dodging the bat for dear life, the teams eventually resorted to throwing towels at the bat, trying to knock it from the sky. It didn’t work either.

Yes, that’s Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” fittingly playing in the background. Marquette did eventually get the win.

“At first it was kind of funny,” Marquette head coach Buzz Williams said, “But then it was like, ‘Damn the bat, we have to win.’”

Pretty sure that’s the first time that sentence has been uttered in a postgame press conference.

Oh, and yes, the Friars have a player on their team named Kadeem Batts. Because of course they do.

Of course, this isn’t the first time a bat has invaded a basketball game. You might remember Halloween (yes, irony) 2009 when Spurs guard Manu Ginobili angered PETA with his freakish, one-handed slap which knocked a bat out of the air.
