The Sustainable Business Network’s food and brew fests are all about keeping it local

If you’re the only schmuck in this city still eating apples from Chile and chickens from some faraway factory, no offense, but it’s time to get with the program. New England might not be California, with its orange groves and everything-all-the-time growing seasons, but what we got ain’t too shabby, neither.

If you made it to the Boston Local Food Fest this past weekend, then it’s likely you already know that. The Sustainable Business Network hosted the annual fest, where our most hard-core farmers and lifesaving culinary businesses hung out on the Greenway and fed attendees the best stuff on the block. As an extra karma boost, the event is always notoriously zero-waste, meaning 100% of energy use is offset.

“What’s so great about being at the Boston Local Food Fest is that you get to see all the facets of our food community, from the farms, to retailers like us, to the best chefs in Boston that utilize our products,” says American Provisions brand manager and produce buyer Erin McIver. “[It’s] a representation of the collaboration that goes on everyday to produce the most delicious and socially conscious foods.”

Though the fest also features live music and various activities each year, the main draw is always the chance to get on board with sustainably grown and produced eats, and to shake the hand of the person who literally just coaxed that carrot out of the ground.

“Since everyone eats, food has the ability to shape our culture. It’s important to take a step back and see where your food is coming from, because it ultimately is affecting all of us,” McIver says.

Didn’t make it out to the fest? Check out the Boston Local Craft Brewfest this weekend which serves to both showcase local breweries in the same vein as the Food Fest and fundraise for next year’s Local Food Festival. Think globally, eat and drink locally!
