Nicole Richie excels at balancing work and life

As an actress, philanthropist, entrepreneur, author of the new book “Priceless” and mother of two children, Nicole Richie knows firsthand what it’s like to manage a complex lifestyle. She shared with me how she does it:

How do you prioritize your time during a given week?

I wake up between 5:30 and 6 every morning and sit with my thoughts and inspirations and decide what I’m going to focus on that day. I answer my e-mails and then I prioritize from there. I am a huge list-maker, so I make a list in the morning of things I need to do for that day and then just go from there. To be realistic, I’m sure I probably get about 70 percent of it done. It’s not like I’m good at getting everything done, so it’s more of a goal.

What other tips can you give for maintaining a more balanced life?

I make sure I spend quality time with my family. That comes first before anything. It’s important to create boundaries because it’s very easy to get sucked into whatever you put yourself into. It’s important to create boundaries and to create schedules. I always get into that mindset before going into anything.

How big of a role do your husband and father play in your career?

I actually don’t like hearing their advice. They are always the last to see the book or the last to see the clothing. Their opinion really will stray me in an opposite direction.
