The Word: What is going on with Adam Sandler?

Although we’re no longer laughing with him (and his twin sister), Adam Sandler is actually laughing all the way to the bank. “Jack and Jill” came in second at the box office this weekend.

Adam Sandler was once comedy’s golden boy. Sure, he was never, ever highbrow — but his comedy was pretty funny. (Come on, like you don’t know every lyric to “The Chanukah Song” or haven’t seen such ’90s comedy classics as “Billy Madison” or “Happy Gilmore” at least twice.) But it seems like in his bid to be a huge box-office draw, Sandler has sunk to the lowest depths of unfunny. In his latest, “Jack and Jill,” he cross-dresses to play his own sister — and as we all know, once you start playing multiple versions of yourself, it’s all downhill. Call it the Murphy Trajectory, if you will.

It’s so bad that “Jack and Jill” debuted to a zero percent — later upped to 3 percent — rating on the critic aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Even duds “Yogi Bear” and “The Smurfs” have scored higher. So Metro has compiled the handful of films that scored even worse — zero percent and stayed there:

‘Troll 2’ (1990)
The cult classic, about a group of vegetarian monsters, is so bad it was the subject of a documentary called “Best Worst Movie” — directed by one of the cast members. Funniest part: There are no trolls in “Troll 2.”

‘Pinocchio’ (2002)
Remember Roberto Begnigni? The “Life Is Beautiful” actor who won the Oscar and climbed over the chairs at the ceremony? He cast himself as Pinocchio in this live-action disaster. “What can one say about a balding 50-year-old actor playing an innocent boy carved from a log?” asked one critic.

‘Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2’ (2004)

Talking babies battle bad guys with superpowers and farts. It’s from the director of another critically acclaimed hit: “Porky’s.”

‘Strange Wilderness’ (2008) and ‘Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star’ (2011)
One’s a satire of nature documentaries, featuring Bigfoot, and the other is a satire of porn, featuring a small penis. Who executive produced these masterpieces? Adam Sandler.
