Recent grads: Land your dream job

This body language might be a little too positive — save it for after the interview.

I’m not going to go on and on about the bad economy, because you’re sick of hearing about it.
Instead, let’s focus on how to get a job in your field instead of settling for a random position at a company you don’t want to work for.

A new millennial career study conducted by American Express and Harris Interactive shows that nearly 70 percent of recent grads are either not working or working at a job that’s not in their field of study.

You shouldn’t settle for a job that just pays your bills — it will be almost impossible to succeed at a job that isn’t aligned to your passions, strengths and personality. Here are some techniques that you can use to get your dream job in any economy:

Brand yourself online to attract the right opportunities

Job searching in today’s world is less about submitting résumés to job boards and corporate websites and more about being found online. That’s why you need to be active on social networking sites and have your own website. Employers are searching for you or people with your skills.

Make job searching a full-time job

The more effort you put into anything, the more you will get in return, as long as you work smart. If you only spend a few hours per week searching for a job, it will be hard to compete in this marketplace.

Treat your life like a networking event

Recognize that any person you meet can change your life and help you get your target job. Whether you’re on a train or at an event, there are people there that can either hire you or refer to the right job.

Have a positive attitude

If you apply for jobs just for a paycheck, your body language and verbal communicate will show that. This is why you need to focus on your passion. You need to exhibit that energy and glow that makes people want to work with you.
