Trick or Eat: Halloween feasting around town

All Hallows Eve, Dia De Los Muertos, Samhain, Halloween: whatever you call it, October’s spooky celebrations coincide with harvest time and, historically, that means a feast is involved. From multi-course dinners so good they’re scary to day of the dead nibbles, themed desserts and spiced teas, here’s where to have yourself a tasty Halloween.

Rosa Mexicano’s Dia de Los Muertos menu celebrates autumn bounty with a fall guacamole that incorporates roasted pears, apples and toasted almonds into their fresh guac. Follow that with sea scallops with a pumpkin seed pipian, Mexican corn mushrooms and caramelized chayote squash.

Thursday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 3. 155 Seaport Blvd., Boston. 617-476-6122 or rosamexicano.com.

Local 149’s Halloween party will include “spooky bar bites” such as pumpkin arancini, pigs in a blanket, mac ‘n’ cheese fritters and — what else? — deviled eggs.

Thursday, Oct. 31. 149 P St., Boston. 617-269-0900 or local149.com.

Head to Sweet for Ghostly Vanilla, Freshly Baked Bats and Spooky Sayings — aka adorable cupcakes dressed up as ghosts and the like. Having a party? They’ve also got a made-to-order Not-So Itsy Bitsy Spider cake, sized to satisfy from six to 60 ghouls.

49 Mass. Ave., Boston. 617-247-2253; 225 Newbury St., Boston. 617-267-2253; Zero Brattle St., Cambridge. 617-547- 2253; 11 School St., Boston. 617-227-2253. sweetcupcakes.com.

Among many ghostly delights, Upstairs on the Square’s last Halloween party — the horror! —includes a bloody good tasting menu. The restaurant’s monthly vegan feast gets spooky with Full Moon squash soup with sage and pepitas; a Bloody Beet Salad that pairs beets with goat cheese, blood oranges and pistachios; and Pasta from the Black Lagoon, made with tofu-stuffed ravioli, black quinoa and smoked black trumpet mushrooms. Finish it all off, if you dare, with a Shrunken Head, a baked apple stuffed with walnuts and cranberry.

Thursday, Oct. 31 through Sunday, Nov. 3. 91 Winthrop St., Cambridge. 617-864-1933 or upstairsonthesquare.com.

Want to ward off the night’s chill? Need a Halloween house gift? David’s Tea’s Spooky Collection includes supernatural seasonal brews like a Pumpkin Chai with cinnamon; the Stormy Night, an organically grown black tea supercharged with chocolate, cinnamon, coconut and vanilla; and licoricey Ceylon Star, a Ceylonese black tea with star anise, white chocolate, cocoa nibs and coconut. David’s Tea’s even has a heat sensitive Jack O’ Lantern mug for Halloween-a-holics.

661 Tremont St., Boston. 617-585-9534.
