So Brooklyn: Artisanal goods at the new Whole Foods Gowanus

Whole Foods BK
The Gowanus Whole Foods is located at 214 Third St. at Third Ave. www.wholefoodsmarket.com, 718-907-3622.

After years of speculation, Whole Foods finally opens its much-awaited doors in Gowanus on Tuesday — the company’s first Brooklyn location. The 56,000 square-foot gourmet food emporium will naturally stock its aisles with tons of small-batch, artisanal, Brooklyn-made goods from purveyors who probably have old-timey mustaches and grew their ingredients on a rooftop farm somewhere. In other words: everything you want in your pantry. We take a look at some of the specialty and exclusive items you can find there in addition to a beer hall (on the roof, of course).

Q&A: Insider knowledge
Elly Truesdell, Whole Foods Market Local Forager for the Northeast, yes that is her title, fills us in on what to look for on shelves.

What requirements did you have for the BK-made items being stocked at Whole Foods Market Gowanus?
“The real requirements here are that these products are natural and never contain artificial ingredients, coloring, preservatives, etc. We asked the vendors, many of which we’ve worked with for a long time, to create something truly unique for us. Whether it be a new line, a new variety or flavor, or a collaboration with another vendor. In the end, we were able to curate an incredible list of items from the city’s most talented producers.”

What do you expect to fly off the shelves first?
“We think the exclusive beers from Evil Twin and Captain Lawrence will be really popular. Folks will likely line up to try YUJI Ramen at his new venue in the store, Roberta’s new line of frozen pizza, and the new yogurt flavors we’ll have from Chef Dan Barber’s Blue Hill, White Moustache and Culture.”

What are a few of the items you’re most excited about?
Some truly first to market items are:
- A whey made by White Moustache, a yogurt maker based in Fort Green. The whey is a byproduct of the yogurts.
- Van Leeuwan’s first line of vegan ice creams.
- A variety of essences, powders and more from SOS Chefs. We’ll be the only place to find these outside of their storefront on Avenue B.
-Our new store will provide knife sharpening services from Christopher Harth of NYCutlery, plus we’ll be selling their knives and specially-made Third & 3rd cutting boards.
- Two of our local vendors, Evil Twin Beer and Chocopologie, teamed up to brew a beer made from chocolate, and then a truffle made from a beer. Each of products don the name Even More Demark, and they’re amazing.
- Severino Pasta has come up with three new varieties of gnochhi, each made from local cheeses and local flour.

More at the market:
— Rice & Miso Everyday’s first ready-to-eat line of rice balls.
— O Milk’s Chocolate Peppermint Almond milk.
— Anarchy in a Jar’s Apple Fig jam featuring locally sourced figs and apples.
— Baked Vegan Vanilla Hemp granola
— Café Grumpy’s unique roast coffee
—Acme Brooklyn’s cured Nova lox
