Turn your living room into a Caribbean island

Check out Malene Barnett’s custom, handmade carpets at www.maleneb.com.

Malene Barnett, the talent behind the New York-based carpet company Malene B, dreams of one day moving to the Caribbean. “I haven’t picked my island yet. So until I do, I want to live in an environment that makes me feel like I’m already there,” she says. Her home has a warm, calm and beachy look that stands out on a block of red-brick buildings. The island feeling literally greets you at her turquoise-colored door.

“It’s my favorite color. I love that I get to see it every day. It’s also unique because I’m the only one on my block with that kind of door,” she says.

She achieved the look by filling her home with creative plays on texture, African contemporary art, crafts collected during her travels and a range of textiles — all against a calm backdrop of the palest blues and white. “Each piece has a story that reminds me of my trips abroad,” she says.
