Milan Fashion Week: Trends from day 1 and 2
Milan is only two days into its runway shows, but a few themes are already emerging
Traditional, mannish prints like Prince of Wales check, houndstooth and plaid pulsed through New York and London like a steady backbeat. They surfaced in just about every show and has already made an appearance in Italy at Gucci, Alberta Ferretti and No.21.
As far as outerwear goes, everything is getting fuller and cozier. Maybe it’s a by-product of the more extreme weather we’ve been seeing this year. But the extra bulk coming down the runway at MaxMara, Fendi and No. 21 seems like a good idea after the blizzards cities like Milan, New York, and London have had.
As the designers were creating their autumn/winter collections, the global economy was threatening to descend into a triple dip recession. So maybe the plummeting hemlines at Alberta Ferretti, Blugirl, Gucci and Francesco Scognamiglio, will at least mean higher profit margins for the fabric mills, which should be whirring nice and steady thanks to all the fabric that will be needed to produce these fuller, longer skirts and slouchier trousers on show this week.
