Nanette Lepore dresses the di Blasio women for inauguration
Michelle Obama’s outfit choices to high profile events are a conscious decision by the first lady to draw attention to American brands, and now Chirlane McCray is trying to do the same for New York-based designers. McCray and her daughter, Chiara de Blasio chose Nanette Lepore last night to the inauguration ceremony of her husband, New York’s new mayor Bill de Blasio.
In a Women’s Wear Daily article McCray said of the decision, “[we’re] proud to wear this beautiful clothing that was made right here in New York City. This city needs more creative entrepreneurs like Nanette Lepore who are committed to keeping our city’s garment industry thriving.”
Lepore and de Blasio’s camp first met a year ago when the designer invited the then candidate to her Garment Center factory. While she was thrilled the de Blasio ladies chose her looks — a vibrant raspberry coat for McCray and a funky leopard-printed one for de Blasio — she was more excited about the Mayor’s comittment to the New York fashion industry.
“I think he will celebrate the New York that we all miss — the New York that we moved here for, the New York of diversity and craftsmanship,” Lepore said in the article.
