Sneakers on the couture runway
Sneakers are having a moment. A big one. Yeah, yeah, every stylish soul from Copenhagen to Sao Paolo is already sporting a pair of hightop Nike’s, but given that Chanel and Dior just presented the ultimate juxtaposition of high and low by teaming kicks with their S/S ’14 couture collections, it seems the sneaker renaissance has hit a higher level. And this time round, they’re glamorous.
Chanel showed pastel sports shoes with its signature tweed looks — though these aren’t ordinary sneakers. Karl Lagerfeld worked with custom-shoe maker Massaro, and each pair probably costs more than your paycheck — and at the Christian Dior show models glided down the runway in sparkly sneakers. Schiaparelli even jumped on the athletic bandwagon too, coming back from its 60-year hiatus with feather-adorned flip-flops. With autumn/winter ’14 collections being right around the corner, are the couture collections a hint to what we can expect more of? Our feet are doing a happy dance in advance.
